Were we given prior notice that this thread was going to start? Just wondering.
Like many of you, Gary once gave me the 10¢ tour down Ball road, up on the 57 freeway, over to the 91, off at Tustin and back to Lime. Big power, smooth ride, all smiles.... At that time, the engine was seriously detuned with low compression and not the 12-second setup as run at the Bug-In. Still, with maybe 160hp (his guess), it would fly down the highway in five!
Nice one Deano , me too saw what ya did there .

I drove that car about 20 years ago. It was a smooth running, well sorted car.
I rolled on the gas in fifth gear doing 70, it went right pass 100 in no time, without a
hick-up.
I also have driven the one in Ratto's garage. That one was very quick!!

This Hot VW`s feauture about the heart of this car should not miss here to round it up:
http://cal-look.no/lounge/index.php/topic,2969.0.html
A blast of an atricle. I used some tricks and mods described in there for my 2,2l build.
I really like those very well written & super detailed tech & car articles from hot VW`s. A rich source for those tech maniacs.
No other mag I read mentioned the spark types/no. which are mounted.
Thanks Mr. Kirsten for that detailing!
A big wish would be an availability of an tech libary from old Hot VW`s in the net. I would even pay for it...
Greetings.

As I recall from doing that story is that those cylinder heads that Gary used on the more street version of his '67 were once full-blown race heads. But now, wanting to run them on the street, he was faced with a very small combustion chamber. So, the deck height went to the moon to get the compresssion ratio near what he wanted. Even though he knew this was not the best street combination he could come up with, still, with the high flow of those heads, he decided to use them anyway.

I remember when I had the motor apart @ my parents in 1994 standing gape mouthed when I got the heads off and saw the work in them. I think the motor had close to .180" deck

Pigsnzen has a much nicer paint color. IMO. Looks great in the T bar iteration. And that's all I gotta say about that.

We know that, we're just giving Ratto shit. Many people have confused the 2 cars for some reason. The first time I heard it was at the Classic in 1999. A guy walked up and said " I remember when Jerry Berg owned this car when he was in the DKW" I laughed my ass off.

What ever happened to berglar? I kind of remember that it's sitting in someone's garage, but he doesn't drive it. What was the story behind that? If so, it's a damn shame...
