i want to know what is a good or accepted as reasonable deck height in an engine?

my engine spec is 82x94. heads are 58cc and have a step in them. and without shims i have a deckheight of 0.52mm now. so with a shim tha measures 1mm (or a 0.040) i would end up with my desired CR of 9 to 9.4

is this OK or do i need more? can i get away with less?

Rule of thumb is minimum 1mm but max 1.5mm to get enough squish.

How much is the step? You should add that to to your deck height.

not sure if i can add the step to my deckheight. i don't want the piston hitting the step or so. i prefer to keep my pistons IN the cylinders for now.  Wink but i do understand what you are saying.
