Any racecar is like a wild bull, you gotta have respect before you climb aboard and take the ride of your life. Wink

Very true TXT. You do have to admit that a reg vw front end with oem steering is a lot more forgiving than a rack. You of coarse are a natural COWBOY so I don't think you would have a problem ;)UD.

Along those lines, I question the use of small diameter steering wheels on cars that race in "straight" lines.  Cheesy

This video just reminds me of back in the early 90s when the Bergs brought the car out to Texas for our Bug-In ...
I remember Gary bringing the car into the waterbox and coaxing the tires into a very conservative start ... couldn't have been more than 4000 rpms in 2nd. He then ever so slowly persuaded the engine to climb up ... up ...up till you knew it was over ... then it increased even more moving through at least 3, if not 4, octaves to probably well over 9000 rpms, held it there for a few seconds and rolled out under power.
Probably the best, most controlled burnout I've ever witnessed and the sound still raises the hair on my arms when I think about it.
Wish I had a video!

Thanks for the advice Jeff,

If I wanted to RACE , I would built myself a car and beat the shit out of it.

I will take this baby for some passes and I guess that even treated with respect it will still be quick & will be fun to drive too.

The engine that will go in the car will have circa 180hp at the wheels, more than enough to have fun. Grin

I know that the gearbox was meant to handle (much) more power  Wink

Yes, but you don't really "own" such cars you are rather entrusted to preserve them and to pass them on to another enthousiast.  Smiley

And have fun with them meanwhile too  Grin

But seriously folks, I copied to DVD, Marla Lowry's - Palmdale / Sears Point, VW drag racing tape. It is about 2 hours long. VERY amateur film footage (sorry 'bout that  Undecided). So, somehow this film footage has leaked to the net.... good.

Marla, if you read this, please PM or e-mail me, as I would very much like to return this tape to you that Mark had lent to me.

Sincerely,

Chris Andrews - The Mailman

It is good to see that Ray's 912 has avoided any visible alterations. When I took possession of the car from Ray (in 1990), I vowed not to visibly alter the car. Rather, I would perform any necessary alterations regarding drivers seating position and current safety rules. I did not remove any items from the car nor did I butcher any. Realizing that my family was of greater importance than that of continuing to remain the caretaker of this car, reluctantly I transferred it to Jeff Denham in 2003. One can only hope that the legacy of this vintage racing icon shall remain preserved for future generations to appreciate.

Respectfully,

Hi Chris

The car is now being worked on to be put back on the track.

The car will be left all original except for the safety features like seats,  safety belt or glass headlights...

Thanks to you and Jeff to have keep it as it was, this car impress everybody by its presence.

Will keep you  posted about the progress.
