What is the safest recommended maximum engine rpm for a standard fan?? Non welded, non balanced original german doghouse type. Just wondering if I need a welded one for the mild motor I'm building for the other halfs car, it wont see past 6K. Cheers, Mat.

I have a non welded fan that saw 6-7000 regularly but I took it out and am going to have it welded. Its like $60 and well worth the piece of mind. $.02

Funny you should ask. I just spent 3 hrs cleaning up a previous repair/welding job on my extra heads. The results of an exploded fan, I don't want
to show you the damage to an IDA.

Won't see past 6K ?  Picture this, you let your new girlfriend drive your car.  She upshifts at 5,800 back into 2nd instead of 4th.  Shocked

Rev limiter.
Its a 74x92 single valve spring motor, with treuhaft 010, c35 cam, 043 heads, 40 IDF's and sensible c/r, until she gets used to it- she's only had a warmed over 1600 t/p in the car up until now.

Stock fan will be fine unless you plan on over driving it more than factory.

The factory hasn't produced these air cooled cars in Germany since I was in high school. Besides, they never over-drove their cars. At least not to our knowledge.

Moving forward, a welded fan (like what's been previously suggested) is more than solid peace of mind. Even on a mild engine, I highly recommend one. But... to each their own.

I think Zach means using a larger bottom pulley or smaller top pulley to increase fan speed.

I think the rate of acceleration of the fan also has to be taken in to account when you consider if you need a welded fan or not.  A stock engine will not rev or acheive rpm as quickly as a tuned engine.  If the engine will be very mild you'll probably be fine, if it will rev quicker and is capable of 7000 rpm I would get a welded / balanced fan.  How much money is in the engine? A welded fan could also be considered cheep insurance.
