My '54 Bug's tank is a little fragile these days and it leaks, not to mention it's rusty inside.

So I want to replace it for the time being with a tank from a 61-67, which are readily available. My question is will the later tank fit the early body?

No you cannot. It is a big difference. There are nowdays some repro like this
