Yeah, the Banana Split thing never really made sense. I miss seeing cars with straight blade bumpers. Rarely ever see that, these days.

Um... Tom, I've already done that thirty years ago. Besides, I've always wanted a car with body trim and U.S. early bumpers. Now, I'm living that dream.

Rick, WHY? I've already had non-VW colored cars. Over it.

Wait... I forgot what day/date this is. Never mind. You two almost had me, there.

HAHA!! Nope, I am neither. Since 1985, I've been wanting to build a '67, '68, '69 Cal Looker using mostly o.e.m. parts and with a more factory look. Just fulfilling a dream, Tom.

Although this IS fun to discuss.

Getting back to the (I think) original theme of this thread (I admit I haven't read the entire thread YET!) ... the fact that you guys (ALL CLUBS) still are able to keep these organizations together after all this time, to me, is absolutely amazing.
I remember reading the mags back when I was a kid, seeing the club photos and representations and such, so wishing there could be something like it going on where I lived.
Unfortunately, VWs in general ... at least modified ones, were so few and far between, not to mention events! Almost NOTHING. I'm sure this was true across the states, maybe even the world? Everybody admires the car culture in SoCal.
Here in Texas, we tried a several years ago to get a club together. Our events were decent sized and there certainly was interest among the 'street racers' ... weren't into showing though we could, so much as we'd love to race each other in our own "Street' class. We organized 'Der Texas Rennen Panzers' at a Texas Bug-In (which later that day got 'called' for rain/weather), laid plans, and did our best to stay connected thru forums and such. Unfortunately, due to too few events and too many miles apart, it just fizzled out ... BUT! I still have the T-shirts!
It's really cool to see the connection y'all had & have and the pride exhibited in maintaining the bonds that hold a club together. Surely this must be a big reason y'all's interest has remained over time ... I know mine fades from time to time.
I remember talking with my good friend Shubee (DSK) last year ... they had an informal 'reunion' @ Bug-In 35. These guys have been friends all this time because of a car club they formed way back when they were just kids ... very cool. I know it's the same for all of you ... DKP, DKK, DVB, even DRF, VC & others ... how many have there been???

Well, I don't want to get too long-winded here ... all I can say is I so admire you guys can hold it all together through the years and BS (that MUST exist?). I think that's outstanding and hopefully know how damn lucky you are ...

Feel free to PM me for my address to send club membership forms and paraphernalia ... LOL  Grin

So I was thinking more about this ...
Last year (2010) I was so very luckily granted pass as a guest (by a Great Friend!) to the DKP Reunion at Paul & Mark Schley's place... Lucky? ... Fortunate? Roll Eyes OK ... Blessed Grin
This is where it all came through to me. There is a reason why DKP is considered the pinnacle of clubs, and not just among VWs in my opinion. I tried to downplay it, but I realized how integral car culture can be walking and talking amongst these serious 'enthusiasts' (clearly an understatement), and obviously a great bunch of friends.
There exists a lifestyle that centers around a 'way of life' that is cars, and these guys walk the walk.
I think it's perhaps because of the lack of enthusiasm I fell/fall into from time to time, or the lament I feel when it comes on, but I can't say I considered MY 'guarded fury' for the hobby truly valid until it was displayed so evidently before me. And to be honest, it may simply be due to the fact that I live it daily in my job ... somehow I found it 'OK' that I think about this 'stuff' ALL DAY. My inner FREAK was confirmed!
Now, I can't say that it wouldn't have happened had I not aspired to the 'Mt. Olympus of VWs' during the celebration of an awe inspiring 45th year reunion, but what a great place and group to find it! I actually got to meet (after all these years) and talk with gracious hosts the Schley Brothers, Darrell Vittone, Ken Lowry, Dee, Gary, Clyde ... really TOO MANY of my heroes to list ... all to find they are pretty normal people with big hearts ... and they think it's perfectly normal to live and breathe cars near every moment of the day. and this was all due to a car club formed by three teenagers back so long ago? ... not so very long though.

Kinda makes me want to start a new club ... all about cars, or is it? Wink
For now? I've got some stuff to do in the garage ...
Until later,
TxT

It's not about the cars... I've been in at least 15 different car clubs... Only through DKK have I made life long friends.
