Wheel hop

Hello,


Had my first real experience of proper wheel hop the other day in my beetle.
Pre loaded the gearbox on the clutch and hand brake and fed in the power and the rear spun up (guessing one wheel), and all was fine for a short while till it gripped and i got a nasty hop!

So normal option to combat this seems to be a traction bar, only my beetle has a removable rear end so i'm not so sure how much force i want to be putting on the rear end like that?

What are the other options?

I know of the Kafer bars setup.
but also see Dawn's beetle had "rabbit ears" that Ray (RIP) had made which looked good too...

What are people using in street cars? its got all new stock rubber mounts and is swing axle.

I used a camber compensator, rubber snubbers and hefty preload with straps (bumps stops touching at rest).
But that's coz I had it all anyway, probably "nicer" ways out there.

Some good methods at the bottom of the page here. Bracing up to the parcel shelf is the only option if you've not got provision for a berg bar or similar. Or the CSP torque bar.

My car suffers from wheel hop even if I pre-load the box, as soon as the tyres break traction the sledge hammering begins, my box is solid mounted with a mid mount to boot.

I've also heard that a CSP torque bar eliminates wheel hop although I have read that it doesn't work for all people, whether that is due to people not pre-loading the bar when fitting I couldn't say.

I'll probably go with the CSP bar or the Berg bar as I don't want to be cutting my shiney new parcel shelf panel.

Cheers guys, i've got a CC i could refit.

I need to have a look and see if i can fit a torque bar, got a cooler and filter in the parcel area.... will check next time i get it on the ramps.

direct to the parcel area looks easy enough to do though and solves the issues pretty solidly! might need a rubber sheet in-between it otherwise i can see that being very noisy otherwise...

Wheel hop only occurs in a straight line.  Add a slight curve and you prevent all hop.

So after I preload the trans with the handbrake, rev the engine side step the clutch and then turn the wheel?

I also have a removable apron but used a berg traction bar with succes. Used the holes which are already in the body for the hangers.

i'll look into that as its very easy and cheap to do.... do you preload it a bit from "resting" height? could quite easily make my own too i think from strong rectangle or box section

I would thoroughly recomend the Funkenblitz mod posted in the link above. That combined with cb performance rhino mounts and a berg mid mount and traction bar gave me no wheel hop even at the drag strip before I had a cage fitted which went down to the frame horns.

For me wheel hop is also reduced by the correct tyre choice/pressure and shock absorbers. koni reds are by far my preferred choice.

If done right, you don't have to drill many holes in the firewall/package tray when doing the funkenblitz mod.

+1 for Rhino mounts

I used this with a CSP bar and cage down to the ends of the frame horns.

Car never had a single hop. I did quite a lot of hopping a couple of weeks ago though

i'm no doctor but...... 


Thing is i have the 73 and later front mount and they don't make them for that... which doesn't help that i have softer mounts anyways, although new.

i might make up a conversion bracket for the front maybe, doesn't look hard tbh.

i'll look into the traction bar idea, wondering how much sound that under parcel shelf option will transmit to the cabin?

Try dropping the tire pressure. My DOTs wheel hop like mad at 25 lbs.
14lbs. no problem

My wheelhop is gone..did some tracion bars from RLR on the framehorn..
