I'm about to install a steering column in my tube chassis pro stock notch project and have been researching online some kits that are available. Most include a 3/4" steering tube with a outer column that mounts to the dash bar (welded to)

The bit I can not get my head round is what stops this inner steering tube moving back and forth in the outer tube? Do you have a uj right behind the outer tube one end and the quick release hub tight to the outer tube the other end? Hope you are all still with me....

If you look at the pictures in reply number 83, it shows the inner column poking out the top of the outer column but what stops you pushing it down?

You don't need to have anything tight against each end of the outer tube. If the column has u/js in it, pulling or pushing on the steering wheel will only try to move the column to one side (which you can't do because of the bearings in which the inner column runs) – you can't compress the u/j or the lower part of the column, or make it stretch, so nothing moves.

I use 20mm mild steel pipe to the steering column
quick release you can buy at Andy Robinson racecars   (  http://www.robinson-race-cars.co.uk/ )

Steering wheel

Here in Sweden buys the cheapest here

If you are not able to produce so I can make such a sleeve

I used a baja aluminium bolt-on housing like this http://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=C26-750-131-7 and stock shaft with a weld on snap-of steering wheel kit.
Easy to adjust if needed and works greate  Smiley

I use a firewall steering column mount and a laser cut mount.
