A small update from my day on the Dyno (AKA the scary day!)

Start with the good news that the motor ran well, no oil leeks no blown pipe work and no destruction! Was really happy with reliability of the motor and we had a very smooth power curve.

The bad point was it didn't make as much power as I was hoping for, We only made 171 HP at the wheels (I guess about 230 HP at the flywheel?) at 8 PSI

I was hopping that we make more like 250HP at the wheels, so this is a bit disappointing Sad  Iv seen other motors on CB performance youtube channel making as much as 300HP with the same spec, so I feel for some reason my motor is down on HP. Now I know we are a bit conservative with the boost only being set at 8 PSI, so I have just bought a boost controller and I think I will take the car back after Festival of Power at Easter and add boost.

The plan now is to run the car at Festival of Power (FoP) and see how we get on. I don't plan on altering anything at the strip but I do hope I smash my PB! Will see how we get on and maybe head back to the rollers after the meet. The second thing that came out of the dyno session was that fact that the rear suspension was not correct and it was riding way to high. So I am just on the process of re-adjusting the spring plates. Iv also made a gauge pod that fits in the glove box for the head temp. oil temp and boost gauge.

You have to do these things when your trying to keep the car looking as original as possible Smiley

I have a few videos of the dyno run so will be making anther youtube video as soon as I got some free time.

Forgot to mentioned that we also discovered that the charge cool systems was not cooling the charge as the pump and the radiator where to small. Iv been advice to ditch the whole system (which as you know reader took me an huge amount of time and money to sort out) and just add an ice tank and pump at the rear. This maybe another reason way the car was down on power.

Am going to remove the pump, radiator and pipe work tonight and run the car with the system at FoP. Iv got an engineering company making me an ice tank so that should be up and running for the next meet.

8 psi = 0,55 bar

171 whp @ 0,55 bar = 110 whp NA.

In other words, your 2332 engine without the turbo is capable with the current tune to produce 110 whp which is fair enough with lazy compression, lazy ignition and fat tune.

110 x 1 bar = 220 whp
110 x 2 bar = 330 whp

John,
Whilst the boost figure is low I think somethings up with the turbo or setup?
8psi total is fair enough but pressure is only starting to creep up by mid 4000rpm and its only making 4psi by nearly 5k rpm.

Dont suppose there were any boost leaks? Is the wastegate sealing properly ? If its not then it will be bypassing exhaust and you wont get 'nice' boost.
As its a proven kit from CB I wont ask if the turbo is size correctly but I would have if youd have built this yourself.
Maybe a boost controller can help, especially if you've got one with a divertor valve, so you can force the wastegate closed and start making boost as low in the rev range as possible.

Cheers

Time for an 2019 end of season update and its long one (sorry!)

So where did we get to?

Our first racing meeting after our dyno run was festival of power, I was hoping for big things and get the car easily into the 12’s...but it wasn’t to be. Ever since I fitted the bugtech shifter Iv been having trouble getting the car into second gear and my first run was no different, missed second and rolled over the line at 14.25 @ 94.86, however I did do my best ever 60ft time of 1.59 which I was pleased with. Second run can had no power and we never made a third as the engine developed and loud noise from the case and we retired the car.

I sent the engine up to Daz Chandlers for inspection. It turned out the engine had an oiling issue and it killed the crank! As you know, am crazy unlucky and this was a new build motor. Anyway, I won’t point fingers or say anything else other then its was back to the drawing board yet again. After a few chats with various engine builders it was decided we were going to rebuild the motor again but this time to a 2276cc (I have had a lot of conversations with folks about 2332cc motors and most agree that the extra 56cc you gain using the 84mm crank really is completely pointless as the 84mm cranks are just far to weak) The cam was also wrong for my turbo setup in the 2332, so that was changed from FK87 to FK10. I only needed a new cam, crack and followers so the cost to repair wasn’t the end of the world. (but still…)

I had ordered a set of M&H slick from Track stuff in the winter which had now arrived, Never ran slicks before so these should be fun.

I got the engine back from Daz in July 2019, and everything was refitted, and we were up and running in time for VW action. (Minus the charge cooler as it wasn’t cooling the charge anyway) Then more bad luck… We were ready to run at Action when the fuel pump kept blowing fuses, We spent the day trying to find out why, and eventually located the problem. We removed the fuel filter to clean it found out that it was full of rubber! The new fuel line that I had installed in the new year had completely disintegrated! (bought from ebay) Long story short, the rubber had somehow managed to bypass the filter and got everywhere, destroying the fuel pump, fuel regulator, and damaging the injectors! So we returned home broken again.

BROKE AGAIN!

After more nights in the garage, and replacing all the fuel lines (this time with more expensive demon tweeks fuel line) it was time for Nation finals

First run and I missed second gear again! However did an even better 60ft time @ 1.53!!! Really pleased with that! So I've decided it was time to swap the bugtech shift out and replace it with an old Hurst shift I had (Bugtech shifter its cool as hell but I just can’t live with it) Second run was better and the car pulled a really nice wheely, 3rd run of the day was also good, good pulled strong (another great wheely!) and we ran 13.1 @ 104mph Happy with that. On Sunday we were going to turn the boost up and really give it some beans! However it rained all day and we didn’t get the chance to run.

It's now the end of the season and we have a running car, which can only improve over the winter...watch this space

car is looking amazing! but you are very unlucky Sad
i'm converting my car to PTFE lines and reading stories like yours makes me glad i am, the hose isn't too bad at about £10 a meter and i've got 3 meters(admitantly the fittings are a bit, but I've got most of mine from torques uk on ebay), which should be enough as i'm running hard lines front to back... something to consider in the future maybe?

what are your intake temps like? i'm surprised the charge cooler isn't working? any thoughts on why?
and also shame on the shifter as that's my dream shifter (if thats such a thing)

hope the winter upgrades go well  Cool

Yeah, I may change to PTFE in the future, am just trying to work out the location of my water/meth pump and tank. I may remove my original fuel tank and fit a fuel cell, if I can't find anywhere suitable to mount the water/meth, in which case I will change all the fuel lines at the same time.

I can't remember the intake temps, but they didn't really change with the charge cooler pump on or off. The main issues was the pump just wasn't pumping enough water. and the radiator was to small to cool what water went though it. Because I want to keep the car looking stock, I didn't want to start cutting holes and adding big radiators, so Iv gone done the water/meth route.

The Bugtech shiftier is super cool, I just can't live with it. A lot of people love them it just wasn't for me (tho looked very cool)

That's a depressing point to get to in the story! Sorry things have been so rough! Keep moving forward, hopefully things can only get better from here!
