Thanks everybody, Zack I use single stage but clear over it, Reason being B/C C/C to me doesnt adhere that well and the single stage seems to bite in a little better and then clear over while still wet.

Wow Danny, that first pic brought back some memories, razor blade, the light reflection next to your hand looks like 2 big gaggers. Not that I ever partook in such things Grin

Hey randy, How do you think I getting it done ! Just kidding. Thanks again everybody, Its the fun part now, digging out all the stuff I have collected and haveing a place to put them. I wish it would be done for this years classic, But next year is more likely. Hell theres alot to go still and I got customeer stuff setting around waiting to be worked on. Again thanks everybody for all the positive feed back, Its nice to hear.

Hi hector, I used concept 1 single stage for color and cleared while wet with concept 2021 clear by PPG. I bought it when I was still in ca. 6-7 years ago, But you can get it here in nevada. I do not know where you are located but some stuff is getting harder to get as the water base stuff in sneaking into play

All the minutae of engine specs and this cam or that cam gets me a little lost, but I really love all this shit about bodywork and paint..... Keep it coming Danny.....I'm sure I'm not the only one that's learning loads!

Danny,
what do you think of the water base paints, had my elky painted by one day in water, I think it looks good after a little over a year (and watching it drive by while standing on the curb).  But I would hesitate to have a car that I'm not going to drive daily (expensive paint job) done with water.  When I go to do the ghia next spring I'd like to know my options here in cali.

There is + and - to water base stuff, But I havent used any and do not know how it holds up. But the clean up is great and you can recoat any time, Yoy dont need to sand if let set for more than 6-8 hours. You can spray a coat go on vacation for a month come back and recoat.  I used it back in the mid 80s , hated it then but things have up graded since then. Plus there will be old painters if people started useing more . In the last year or so I have heard of 3 great painters die. from cancer. Jim there is a artical in the new hot rod mag on water based stuff.

On the subject of water based paint,we've been using it in the u.k for 10-15 years.(solvent is technically only for classics and commercial)
Its only the basecoat that is water based so you still get a solvent primer beneath it and a solvent clear on top of it to seal it in.
If anything the water based base coats have a better lay-down and atomisation with difficult metallics such as light blues,golds,silvers etc.The only real downer is the longer flash off times between coats,but newer booths are fitted with specific water based drying systems which has made this a bit quicker.
What I'm trying to say is don't panic guys,it takes a bit of getting used to but it won't wash off in the rain! Grin

Cheers everybody, Now I am fired up, I'm getting pulled in two directions, My car and customeer cars. I started clearing over single stage while wet some time ago, It seems to hold up. I sprayed my old 67 that brian plummer owns now about 10 years ago and it still looks pretty good and before that I had a bay window double cab that I did the same and held up. But paint has a way of breaking your heart some times. I have heard lots of good about water base, But would like to paint something that was not that important and see how it holds up here in nevada. Again thanks everybody

I've seen that on my car which my brother used to own - all cellulose, base and clear - the clear just hazed up in moist weather. It made a dark red car look pink... The disappointment with the paint job was enough to turn my brother away from old cars for good - 14 months restoring the car with my Dad and I, then within three months the paint went bad. He parked the car and left it, it got used for maybe 3 years in the last 13. Undecided

Did we make the mistake of letting the colour go hard, then colour sanding with 1200, then clear over the top? Was there enough of a key for the clear to bite into? I'm repainting the car next week (just a 20ft job!) and I'm not sure if I need to take off the clear coats and get back to solid paint?  Huh
