Try and build the hottest hot-rod motor you can, using only factory internals...  Webers and headers are ok... post your ideas.

leading up to another post idea....

see ya,

Cool idea, Jim. Hopefully, we'll get some insightful input/posts regarding this. For extra credit, use Solex 40P11 carbs.

Thanks Mark... kind of a Formula Vee way of thinking, but 1600cc instead of 1200cc, able to use stock valved dual port heads (but go ahead and reshape ports, plunge-cut...etc...), actually what about those Brazilian 88mm p/c (Puma?) and the OE VW 1.25 ratio rocker arms....   Wink

if it came stock on a VW product, it's fair game.

Oxyboxer 2.1L with aircooled parts... Heavily modified VW heads... 181 Fan shroud... Solex 40PII carbs...

that's a neat idea, but let's say you have to keep it 1584cc....

69mm stroke by Sp2 88mm bore
stock valved d/p or 041 VW heads
stock VW cam (but can use 36hp gear for less drag)
VW 1.25 ratio rockers
you can grind, port, lighten, flycut....

And my race car (which those front wheels came from!) ran a 1584cc motor with stock crank (just added 4 extra dowels!), rods, pistons, barrels, valves and springs, oil system and I think stock cam as well. Added carbs and a header and ran 15.75 best! As far as i know, the case halves had nevre been split and it was as built in the factory! Wink

i think the key in building this kind off engine is getting all the specs and tolerances just right. attention to detail and finish will be important. i know when i rebuild the 1641 engine it was way better then before, by just taking care off the cooling (improving it and close it all like it should be) and have a less restricted oilcircuit with less bents in the fittings and lines. it ran at 70°C - 80°C and that improved power a lot over the hotter running engine before that.

76mm wasser crank with P/Cs from a 1700 type 4 (90mm bore - can be modified for type 1 stud pattern) equals 1933cc
wasserboxer cam and 1.25s, stock dualports ported/polished, 36/40 solexes from a type 4 or porsche 914 on type 3 manifolds Tongue
stock exhaust opened and the tubes modified to let them flow more (like porsche salzburg rallye bugs)
228mm clutch from a wasserboxer, TSZH ignition....
wait... i got most of these parts in the garage Huh

NICE! Sounds like what Jim's after. We're going to need detailed pictures, showing you building this wonderful engine.

i wanted to build this engine for my 61 panel. what i still need is a 1mm linebored case, so i can fit the waterboxer crank
the panel needs a ground up resto first Tongue

Had it weighed once with the old cage, before the chro-moly one went in. It was 1639lbs (743kg) with me in it, and at the time i would have been about 17stone, so roughly 1400lbs (635kg) without me! I loved it too - pity the new owner didn't. It was scrapped 8 weeks after I sold it. Roll Eyes

Aircooler 'Zine was the brainchild of Ben Bosworth, our late club president. He did one full size issue and several smaller ones, always a superb read! Grin

Long story, and completely off topic, I've just spent 15 minutes writing it out but it's not worth going into too much detail.

End of the day, I sold the car to someone who was going to race it, they chopped it up. I expected it - his previous car was a german looker based on a late '90s Mexican, that got chopped up. Before that he had a '62, as a stocker restored by Julian Hammond (now works at BFY Obsolete I think) it was shown at Stanford Hall and I believe it even won a few shows. That car is now a beach buggy because he cut the shell up as he was driving it! Last I heard he'd got a new Beetle with an Audi TT motor that had mysteriously gone missing. He's a f*cking moron and I hope he drops out of the VW scene before he chops up anything else.

the type 4 or wasserboxer valves are longer than stock type 1, so i think you will have problems with the pushrods (remember, only vw parts Grin)
there must be some way to use the type4 rockers, but i think they are longer than a type1 rocker (i mean the spacing of the axis of the valve to the pushrodtube is greater), maybe the pushrods will rub the tubes Huh
biggest problem i see is the exhaust, because the modified stock muffler is loud as hell Tongue
