Help, I'm looking for a set of original American Racing five-spokes for my Oval. The problem is, apart from loving how they look, I can't find out much about them. Does anyone know... - Offsets -What sizes they came in - What they are made of - What I might pay for a set Thanks in advance www.type-magazine.com

If I recall correctly, I believe Dave Conklin had a set on his 67 when it was featured in the magazine. Absolutely wicked look! Then he went and put pie pans on it.

There are a a few variations on the Porsche pattern Americans. What I have on my 67 are the alumiunum versions which came in a 15x7 size with approx 4 3/4" backspacing. I had my fronts narrowed to 4" for obvious reasons. Expect to pay between $12-1500 for a good set of 4 in need of minor restoration and then add in the cost of narrowing.
The wheels on my Porsche are the magnesium version. This is what Carlos has on his 67 beetle as well. The magnesium wheels came in 15x5, 15x5.5, 15x6, 15x7 and 15x8. The wheels on my 911 are 15x6 and Carlos is running 15x5.5 and 15x6 if I recall correctly. Expect to pay $2500-3000 for a nice set of magnesium wheels. More if you can get lugs and caps. In fact, caps are nearly impossible to find....mine and Carlos are the only two sets I have ever seen in person (I keep mine on a shelf)
I know there are at least three variations of the magnesium 6" wheel. The latest version has strengthening ribs on the perimeter of the spokes and gussets on the backside of the spokes. Prior to that, they only had the gussets on the backs of the spokes and the very earlist mag's had no strengthening ribs at all.
Here are the aluminums on my 67

The top wheel is a really early 15x5.5 with no strengthening ribs and the next is a late 15x6 with the strengthening ribs

There was a set of four 15x5 (right, Dave?) at the Classic last month. I think they were asking $3k. One of them had some pretty serious surgery on the backside at one point in it's life.
