1. June 1976; article on 88 x 69 buildup "Building a 1700cc Street Screamer"

2. August 1976 article on Crawford Engineering cylinder heads (of Bad Company fame)

3. Unknown month/year....late 1990's Project Blueprinting 2276 goes on dyno (yellow tin, 48's, Denham welded heads, Dean K article)

Never seen the first two, but would love to read them. Lost my copy of the third.

Thanks in advance!

Sorry, Fabian... I was just joking w/you. HAHA!! If it makes you feel better, I was four years of age in '66. There, now you're young and feeling good about yourself, again. Go frolic.

Thanks for scanning those old articles. Hopefully, they'll be enjoyed for future VW enthusiasts.

Looking back at that 1700cc engine story, I never really liked the way that engine pulled, too much cam for not enough torque (in the sand anyway). I liked it a whole bunch better when I installed a 78mm SPG crank to the same combo, then it was fun to drive! I then went to 92mm pistons (2074cc), and it was a great combination. Finally, I used a stock weight flywheel and it was a dream to drive. That engine lasted for years in the dunes. Finally, one of the 9mm/914 exhaust valves broke and took out a bunch of parts (new owner, not me!). That would have been around 1984.

Sheep's engine is following the tradition set by Dean's 130hp 1700cc, though we're using a 74mm crank, with 88mm bore. The heads are a sort of square port 40 x 35.5 set, and the cam is a little tamer than the special grind listed in article for Dean's, we're using the old Engle V26 with 1.45 ratio rockers. Compression will be tamer as well, in the neighborhood of 8.7:1. One other area where Sheep's will differ is the carburetion, running dual Porsche 40PII Solex carburetors. It's been a long time in the works, but as soon as we get heads back from their final touches, it will be on my stand for the build and then hopefully dyno'd and tuned.
Keep you posted.
