Where is the best place to pick up the oil temp on a VW motor? I was thinking of drilling and tapping the berg sump for the sender.
Thanks,

That's where I have mine. Put it on the side near the rear especially if you have a traction bar.

Yep. That is where the oil is at its hottest, and thats what you need to know.
Why doesnt Berg have a boss built into the sump like all the other old sumps did? Makes sense to me...

Don't know. Thought it would be nice. As thick as they are there shouldn't be any problems drilling and tapping it though.

I don't think so. The furthest reaches of the sump are actually the lowest oil temp. Better is to replace the rear oil plunger plug with a sender. At that location, the temp is measured just before going to the bearings.

Stick senders in a couple of locations and use a switch to cut between them? I guess the temp you need is what it's hitting the bearings at?

i wanted to revamp this topic as it's becoming applicable to me.
how about drilling the block off plate i have to the right of the oil pump cover. i think my VDO sender is M12xsomething and by the looks of it it will fit. but, is it a good location? or may i by doing so block something behind that plate?

Does not the heat around the sender affect anything? I have mine at the side of my Berg sump. I even cover the wire with a stainless hose to protect the wire. The hose did I take from an unused break line. What sender is the best one? Must I use a VDO sender to a VDO unit or can i use for example a Auto Meter sender instead? I have my connection for my mechanical oil pressure where the original pressure sender should be. The original sender is mounted on the "Typ 3" cooler. May be this is not the best way to have them connected. Sorry to ask some more question in your thread but it was so close to the topic of conversation.

do you approve of it, harry? Ha! I think it's more or less in the flow to the pump, and the easiest wiring around the block, IMHO. (i don't trust on gauges/numbers, but if certain needles are rising or lowering beyond what youre used to, then action is required...).

i totally agree on the second part. and that's what i want gauges for. i'll need to find another spot then...
where's your temp sender harry?

I ran a sender there, and it showed temps 30-40F higher(than bypass cap, or oil pressure switch location by distributor), thanks to the proximity of cylinder # 1 1-3/4 pipe coming in to collector. the bypass cap and the oil pressure switch hole showed same temps in my car. The bypass sender makes for a cleaner engine compartment if that matters

I drilled and tapped the top of my fillter mount, seems to work ok

I used a non-electric Autometer oil temp set up mounted in the leading edge of my Berg 3.5qt sump. It seldom showed temps above 180F yet the Berg temp dipstick would be 'lit'. I tested both and they were both accurate. I would shut the car down and watch the Autometer unit rise as the sump heat soaked.
The best was to watch the oil pressure drop as temps rose...

I did the same and it works great. The temperature in the full flow filter is the most interesting temperature imho. Right after the filter it enters the case and gets to the bearings.
