This is a cheap micrometer set that should work fine for you.  You will be able to measure everything from flywheel shim thickness to piston skirts with this set. 

Also with the bore gauge you listed, and this mic set, you will be able to measure skirt clearance on pistons and cylinders, and oil pump hole clearance.

Thanks Brian.

Anything else I need to get?  Depth mike springs to mind and some piston ring tools.

If anyone has any recommendations it'd be great to hear them.

That's pretty sweet! You won't need to check your bore diameter or straightness if you get the cylinders honed by a machine shop, as you will pay them to do that.

snap gauges to set up valve spring height.

dial indicator for all sorts of things, mostly for valve timing, checking for full lift vs coil bind and setting up rocker geometry.

the usual basket of VW tools, crank gear puller, seal installer, don't really need bypass puller or dist gear puller. Flywheel lock will help you.

I did some instructional posts to help a guy out about a year ago on some of this stuff.... you can check them out if you want....

Bumping up this old thread.

For a friend of mine we are building a engine for his 58 bus. We have a nice as41 case and 40 drla. The crank is a dpr 78.4mm with flywheel etc.

I'm looking at heads and cam. Steve tims stage 1? Cb perf new panchito head? We would like to have heather boxes and looking at csp or a1.

You guys got any advice?

New CB Panchito heads with CNC chamber,
Good single springs, aluminum pushrods, light lifters
Matching ported manifolds
8.8:1
1 1/2" header

If you want it rev a little higher, use a Web 163.

My old man had a 1776 built last summer after it turned out the motor in his bus was knackered,  had a hydro lifter conversion in its past amongst other weird stuff.

The 1776 is running the original stock heads from the old motors they were in good shape, and a c25 cam with a new 34 pict 3 along with a stock exhaust. It drives and pulls nicely but idles like it's firing only 3 cylinders. Won't idle until it's warm neither.

Bought some 36 drla carbs for it which will go on once I've got them set up right for the motor. I've an 82mm crank and stock weight wheel to go in it in the future along with some b pistons to give 2110.  I'm thinking I'll get some super stock heads from tims and have him do a full port and polish.  Want to stick with stock heater boxes so these heads are ideal with the stock exhaust valves. We'll be ditching the stock exhaust too in favour of a 4 into 1.
