TriPower ????

I've been e-mailing with a fellow who has a VW with something I've never seen. I'm curious to know if any of you know anything about this setup. Attached are some of his comment regarding how this system works and also a photo of the setup.
"The system works like a progressive system, center carb is for startup, low to mid range, it has a high air correction jet, .225, so it leans out at high rpm's. The side carbs, Tillotsons, work like vacuum secondaries, they are shut down during low to mid rpm's but open via a spring loaded center linkage, at higher rpm's. Tillotsons have a 25mm venturis and an adjustable jet which makes them perfect for this use. I got a higher highway speed now, I can go about 70-75, but, I don't like to drive that fast."

Hi john, I understand there is a thread on this on thesamba, in the old speed forum. It certainly is pretty trick looking! I might try and find it in a minute and post the link on here.

John,
That's actually my tri-power kit sitting on my kitchen table !
The person on the Samba built a replica of it.
These were actually produced way back when.
I have a 36hp version (shown) and also a 40hp version.

The video of it running is sooo cool
Just seeing all of those throttles crack open at the same time is awesome!

Yes, I still have them.
I have a small collection of what I think are unusual vintage intakes.
I have never been able to find out the name of the company that made that particular set-up, but I know of two other original kits that are identical to mine.
The guy on the Samba was trying to buy it from me, and when I wouldn't sell, he made his own.

I think there's something similar going on with the engine on the '52 in the back of the Wolfsburg West catalogue.

I think the one in the back of the WW catalog is just a normal 25/36hp motor with Solex/Okrasa carbs and manifolds doing a balancing act on the cylinder head tin.

You're probably right, seem to remember there being three carbs in the picture but no idea how they got there...
