Title: Scat 86mm wedge mated crank t4 with Porsche rod journal
Post by: Tufty65 on September 25, 2016, 09:47:53 am
Ok so I have this crank which came in a bunch of parts I have, it looks to be old school but measures out great on the mains (std t4) and on the journals (Porsche)
I'd like to use it in my build but think my rod choice is limited ?, I don't want to use Porsche rods as they won't be strong enough and they're hard to come by plus expensive, I need a h or I beam config rod with a 22mm pin but the only place I could find any were revmaster and they  were in an unfinished state and at 5.4" too short and not cheap. (Maybe cheap isn't the right word,I'm not after cheap just not the same price as a new crank!)
Do I need to bite the bullet and just change the crank out for a Chevy journal one instead?

Thanks

Similar decision a few years ago (15!)
I went with Pauter rods with porsche journal at 5.5 to be able to use the crank that had run 912 rods with their shorter stroke.

I wonder how much those pauter rods cost today!

Someone suggested getting a set of Vw Chevy journal rods and having them machined out to Porsche journal then narrowed.

Don't  make it Chevy !     The crank is stronger with the Porsche journals .
If it's rods you're after ,and won't pay for Carrillo/Pauter . You can get a cheaper set of H beams at Custom1warehouse , for Porsche journals .
(Personally I use5.5  Carrillo with my Berg 86mm )

Thanks that's Great I searched for ages to find some h beams longer than 5.352" Im in the UK but that's not a problem so I may have to try a set of these.

I believe there are outfits making H-beam design aftermarket rods for all the vintage race 356 and 912 guys. Do a search. Duane Spencer had talked them up in his hot rod 912/356 books. Scat makes a hot rod Porsche crank maybe to they rods too now?

There are a few suppliers, that have H-beam rod in stock.
more then a few years back, maybe try those.
EMW -  http://www.europeanmotorworks.com/vw/type-4-connecting-rods.html
Aircoolednet - http://vwparts.aircooled.net/category-s/337.htm
They have some porsche journal / 22 wrist pin versions.

Cheers but I Can't see any Porsche journal h beam rods on those links that are 5.5" or longer? and the only other rods on they are 2.0 litre ones which are 50mm journal not 53mm ?

Ha ha yes it's for the bus, I'm swaying that way now anyway, I know of a set of carillo in the uk but they're Chevy journal so was just looking at options.
This will be a few years in the build so I'm in no rush.

I would recommend light pauter rods - Price is about 1200 euros . The bearings work good

A Porsche journal crank will be stronger than a chevy journal crank. I have Porsche length, Porsche journal Carillo rods on my Berg 82mm crank. When I was collecting parts for my engine it took me a little while to find the right connecting rods but I did. It was worth the wait. They do come up for sale occasionally you just have to keep looking. In addition to Pauter and Carillo you can also check with Cunninghamrods.com as they can make any rod configuration you wish.

Ok thanks,
it's for a 2789cc motor and I've  been looking at Manley I beam rods too as they come in a 2.086 journal but the shortest I can find is a 5.9" rod. I'm in no rush so will keep looking out for a set that suits.
