Title: Body to pan sealant - what do you use?
Post by: Neil Davies on September 23, 2008, 09:59:36 am
Well, tonight's the night - the body SHOULD be going onto the floorpan in just under 12 hours time! I've got a new floorpan gasket but I was wondering - do you guys use any sort of sealant with the gasket, and if so, what? ???

The factory used nails to hold the gasket in place !

At the end they were using really sticky close cell foam tape.

I nailed my gasket back to the original holes.

I saved a couple of mine - they're the twisted ones that drive round when you hammer them in, same as the carpet ones. Most were well rotten tho! :D

Didn't get the body on so got another couple of days for any more suggestions.

My main concern is that the replacement pan halves and replacement heater channels are both repro bits so the fit might not be too good. My other bug (replacement channels, original floorpans) leaks in the footwells slightly in really heavy rain with just the pan gasket and no sealant, so I want to avoid this if possible. There was what felt like a sticky grease on front and rear bulkheads, so i'm guessing that the factory didn't just rely on the rubber.

I have used Sikaflex on the past two floorpan gaskets that I have done. This stuff is an adhesive and sealant, so you can stick the gasket to your floorpan, and then it doesn't move when you put the body on.
