Title: Our trip to Das Drag Day #6
Post by: Tekken on October 01, 2008, 20:04:59 pm
Everything was loaded and ready on Tuesday, our trip started early on Wednesday morning. After about 20 minutes of driving we had to slow down due to some work on the road. Then we heard a strange sound from the right rear wheel.. ??? I could'nt believe it,we had 1100 km left to Bitburg and a ferry to catch.Turned out it was only the center nut on the drum that was a little loose, luckily we had brought the tools needed to do the job.Torqued the nut and new pin installed, everything was ok.. :)

After a nice evening on the boat with good food and drinks,we wake up early to have a solid breakfast before we arrived in Kiel. After 5 minutes Torleif began to feel some pain in the stomach, after maybe 10 minutes he was in terrible terrible pain.We had to get hold of a doctor on the boat to give him some pain-stilling,it was still 2 hours before we arrived at port. There was no doubt,Torleif had got kidney stones.. :o
Had to find a hospital in Kiel as soon as we could,he had kidney stones some years ago and had to stay 2 days in hospital before they came out. After some driving around,we finally could park the trailer and get him in to the hospital. The service there was really good,Torleif was taken care of right away.More pain-stilling was given to him intravenously. After some waiting Torleif complained that he was dry as a desert in his mouth,he also began to loose his sight..Hmm,what the hell was happening? ??? It turned out that the valve on the intravenously bottle was waaay to open,Torleif was really drugged.. :D :D
We could not beleive our luck when he walked out 4 1/2 hours later,in some lucky way the stones must have passed trough at the hospital.Torleif was hungry but just fine, got a box with drugs in case of trouble and we where ready to hit the road again.. :) :)

From Kiel we had a nice drive down to Iserlohn and Udo becker.Thought I had a bearing problem on the front wheel on the way down, but it turned out to be only a patch of bad asphalt and a tired driver.. :D After a few phone calls we finally arrived.

We can't thank Karin,Udo,his mother and family enought for the kindness and hospitality they gave us.He was so kind to invite us to stay at his place, and we could drive together the last 250 km on Friday. When we arrived late Thursday evening,we had planned to sleep in the car.But Udo had other plans,he had arranged and heated up his sisters new caravan for us-it was awesome. Before we found the bed,Udo took us to a restaurant and we had the best meal ever. :)

When we got back we had to say hallo to their lovely horses.I did'nt notice the steel vire around the fence, and of course managed to stick my hand trough it.Holy crap,I almost wet my pants :o I suspect that Udo had turned up the voltage just for me.. :D When I stopped shaking I was ready to race, loaded up Udo's car and headed to Bitburg  ;)

Glad to see that Torleif had a good experience with the German nurses.... and I love the fact that Udo turned up the voltage for the fence... that`s one hell of a way to get rid of his competitors on the strip  ;) At least it got you hair back up again  ;D

Don't have any pictures of the few runs I made, only some on video.Managed a 9.58 on the first run.The plan was to do a easy first run to check out the track. But the car hooked good and felt safe trough the gears so there was no need to step of the gas.
The second run was'nt so good.Drifted a little to the right after the start, and I was all over the place when I hit fourth.Just had to abort the run,it was slippery. On the third run the car launched good and straight.Suddenly lost a cylinder at the end of third and shut off at once.
After some wrenching and a leak down test it turned out that a exhaust valve had broken, that was the end of the racing for us. :-[ Appreciate the offer we got from Steve that he could help me vith a new valve.I just did'nt take the chance,in case other valves or piston was hurt.
I hoped the valves would make it trought two seasons, almost did though.. ;) Running with draw trough turbo is hard on the valves.

Man, you're funny. You were the star of the show (9.58 out of the trailer?), and on top of that, you were super nice all WE long (I spent a good while checking your car with Xavier - you let him sit in it and explained all the controls). The car is fantastic, you deserved it.

(PS: But is it cal-look?  ;D )

On the way home to Udo we thought it got dark pretty fast in Germany.Tried to turn on the lights, and then..what the hell??No lights at all,no wonder it got dark  :D Stopped and checked all fuses, but nothing wrong.Since we had only 20km left to Udo,we decided to keep close to Udo's trailer the rest of the way. After a tasty meal and a couple of cold Iserlohner beer we all took a sought-after shower and found the bed.

On monday morning we just had to take a final look at Udo's but mainly his brothers tractor, the Lanz Bulldog. With Torleif's history as an norwegian champion in tractor pulling,we of coarse fell in love with this cool ride when we arrived on thursday.Udo's grandfather bought it new,he gave it to their father and he gave it to them. It's a 2 stroke with one 5 L cylinder.Max rpm is 500,and you start it with a steering wheel.. ;D

Hey Matt,thanks!
I think I was quite lucky.A light polish on the piston top and at the side of the valve seat, and it's ok I think.I'll replace all the valve guides, fresh up the seats and change valves. Also magnaflux all the engine parts for cracks. My valve stems is 11/32 (8.5mm) thick, think that was the difference between bending and not breaking.I'll post some pictures.. :)

Monday morning we where up early and ready to leave, after another nice breakfast together with Udo.Did'nt want to have any rush on the way back to Kiel,in case of any problems on the way.Close to Hamburg the rain started to fall,it was time to turn on the windshield wipers. What the fxxk..?Now we found out they did'nt work, neither did the heater fan.Was quite funny,we just wondered what the next problem would be.. :D

To go shopping 4 hours together with Barbro in Kiel sounded quite scary to me and Torleif,we had to come up with a plan.. :D  ;) Christian at CSP was really kind to invite us to come and vist their shop. When we arrived the boss Peter took us around the whole shop,it was really impressive.

Since our trip mostly consisted of engines and big hp numbers,we just had to have a look at the engine on this boat. :D First we had a look in the controll room, had to take the smallest elevator ever to get there.Because of all the terror in the world,no people where allowed to enter the machine room.
After speaking with the mechanic a few minutes,I think he understood we where kind of hp crazy, and we where really lucky to join him down and have a look.Four V16 engines with 10000 hp each where running "flat out". ;D Could not take pictures,sorry..

in my experience, it's about the people, not the number of cylinders. (sorry for hijacking this thread)

Hey Marc, you don't get that from the inline 6 and V8 crowed??  ;)

What do you think caused the bend valve? Weakend valve springs because of the ratio rockers maybe?
Please check valve spring strenght if you will and let us know how much pressure they lost (or not)..

Yes,I'll post some results, going to change guides, valves and check springs. The valve broke right off in the valve lock groove, dropped into the cylinder and got hit by the piston.

Wow! Alu rods and roller cam  :o
Do the rods have no si-bronze bearing for the piston pin? If not, what do the pins run on?
So thats what it takes to do a low 9 sec huh  ::)

No roller guide wear after x passes?

Hi Stian

You had realy luck with this demage !! But i never saw a valve breaking there . I would change the rods , may be Don can tell you how long it can be used .

Regards from Karin also

Hey Airspeed, yes those rods make all the difference between a high 10 and low 9's.. ;) There are no bearing for the piston pin,alu rods on turbo are also more forgivable if you for instance get knock or detonations.I have to measure both ends and magna flux for cracks each time they are out.If that is okay, then they should be good as Don Pauter said. But I have no experience with them except two seasons in my engine now,so I considre to change them just to be on the safe side. The roller guides still look good after two seasons now, when they get worn I just change them.I also measure my roller lifters and look for cracks each time. :)

Yeah, I can understand the quicker revving of the very light rotating mass would make boost come on sooner.
Speaking of which and if your willing to tell us, whats the max boost you run at?

At the end of the season we ran approx 25psi,but had a lot of back pressure because of a too small turbo.New and bigger ball bearing turbo from PT going in for next season, and some modifications on the Holley carb to get more fuel.Looking forward to see how it works, just have to take it step by step..

Thanks Stian, great to hear you went so fast already with those boost figures.
Amazing to learn that that big turbo was actually too small!
Hope to see you go even faster. Very curieus what the difference will be.
Tnx again for the candid infos,
Walter

I think Stian needs some lightweight lifters and smaller springs . For a turbo engine there is no need for a roller cam !? May be he got some valve float with these heavy lifters and this is why the valve broke !

And the CSP engine !!

arnt they going onto a roller cam next?

dont you think you can go wilder with the roller cam Udo? Ive been studying cams for ages now and the advantages and disavantages of the rollers.

i keep going wilder with my cam and the power is still climbing. dont know if a flat tappet cam would have the same control at 9000 rpm. Keep thinking about putting the motor on a Spintron machine and try out difernt cams and springs.

open to any idea's views on this subject...

Martin.

Yes,I'm sure a flat tapped cam would have worked more than enough for me.The thing is,I had already had the welded and reinforced Autocraft case, together with the rest of the engine parts to build a pro stock engine.Marty and I made a deal, and traded some parts that could'nt be used in the turbo application.

Hi Martin
I think the red baron and CSP 34 have good power  ;)

Udo

thats why im so interested in the subject, im having to use 700lb springs to control my valves. The V8 prostock engine builders ive been talking to about the subject say my springs are a little soft for my cam spec !!!!  you should see the size of pushrods im having to use to cope with the loads.

I did have valve float with 500lb at 7200 rpm. now the motor is happy all the way to 9000 rpm, no float so far.

Thats why I'd like to compare both setups on a Spintron

This subject could have a thread of its own, sorry for the thread jack!

Martin can start a new thread , but i think it was part of Stians trip to take a look at my work and learn only to use lightweight valve train parts   ;) . and now it is too late for Stian to go back to a flat tappert cam and light lifters  :D

Hi udo is it not so that alu rods size on higher rpm s an a hotter combustion and the copper head gasked shrinks when get hotter
to seal better ?
