Title: Magneto and sparkplugs
Post by: Berger on May 08, 2006, 10:36:28 am
I run a 2276 with SF heads, 11,5:1 komp and a Joe Hunt magneto. This works fine except for the plugs beeing worn out after a few runs. The plug itself looks fine, but the spark is just not god enough to get the engine started. New plugs and it fires up just fine. I have tried several brands of sparkplugs with the same result.
Last I used Bosch W7AC with std gap.

Anyone with some magneto excperience who can help?

Last season I used BERU 14-7AU, that's equal to your BOSCH W7 AC. They work fine (Joe Hunt mag; CR 12.0; Mallory Pro Wire). I had problems getting the engine started with the stock starter. A late 6V starter run with 12V solved the problem.

Saludos,
Ole

Thanx Ole. I use Taylor wires.
So You say low "starter-rpm" was the problem? Means that the magneto produce weak spark at very low rpm?
How do You gap Your sparkplugs?

Yep, at least it solved my case. I almost went mad when the engine didn't fire up. After 1/2 hour rechecking everything without any result, I put 24V on the starter for the last try... it started up immediately. I was happy, my neighbors not... ;D

I use the std spark gap (approx. 0.7mm)

Saludos Ole

Part of your starting problem is that the plug gaps are too wide for a magneto. You should regap the plugs to 0.5mm.  8)

Thanks for the advice! I'll try that next time. I need to figure out some other spark plugs anyway. Due to some head welding, it was necessary to modify them to accept 12mm plugs. Guess I'll try NGK DPR5EA-9 or NGK DPR6EA-9. Any suggestions?

Hey, guys.
Im putting together my 2176 these days, and the Vertex gets a few needed goodies to. A new cap, rotor and a 12° ignition curve. I also want to customize my Pro controller to two step... as I have a serious problem with growing horns on the start line.  ;D

But what kind of ignition wires should I get, I don't want anythig to fancy as I want a "old" look to my engine. Does summit have anything for me?
