Title: another 67--- Finished
Post by: karl h on November 26, 2014, 09:47:15 am
russels thread got me thinking, so i decided to post another build thread.
first i would rather finish the work i started on the 61 panel (see link below), but i just havent got the funds for it, sheet metal is realy expensive if you want the good stuff.
last sunday i got this 1300 67 from my friend fredy. someone lost interest after disassembling it. all of the (rust) problems were pretty obvious, so i knew what i was getting into.

I LIKE!  :)

Title: Re: another 67

thanx!
car is pretty complete, the engine is the original 1300, the paint is savannah beige with brown interior in leatherette/cloth
i did start work to determine what i have to do. looks like this: replace both heaterchanels (uggh), the bottom sheet metal of the front bulkhead has to be replaced too (didnt see that before i bought it), new paint, new rubber, clean engine.
for the modifications: i have a set of flat four BRMs, it will get a lowered beam, maybe drop spindles. everything reversable.
but i may graft in a ragtop

Yes!

Title: Re: another 67
Post by: vwhelmot on November 26, 2014, 10:39:36 am
Looks like a good straight (not fucked around with) base car.  Nothing worse than repairing someone`s bodge job..   :)

Title: Re: another 67
Post by: karl h on November 26, 2014, 11:22:45 am
yes, the upper parts are pretty straght, there is only one small hole on the drivers side window frame, front and rear aprons dont have any holes ???, the wheelarches are pretty good too, just the chanells are fucked up (also by "repairs"). very small amount of filler will be necessary before paint
just noticed i posted in the wrong form, shound be "in da werks"

Nice project Karl .

This is a euro spec 67 ? so it has sloping headlamps ?

Are you going to keep these or change to upright lights ?

Rob

You're just a 67  addict  Karl

What's the plan this time. Keeping the tin top this time or metal slider ?

Title: Re: another 67
Post by: karl h on November 27, 2014, 08:50:36 am
Rob, this is an Euro spec car with sloping headlights. since both original 67  fenders and nice headlights are there, i will keep them.
Ron, i might graft in a golde cloth sunrooof, as i did with the former 67. i really like these and you could order these in Europe on standard models up the 67. As for the addiction, i like all bugs. just ran into this one.... the 63 partspile i have maybe is for a keeper
three weeks ago a friend and i got a donor 67 (also a 1300). the shop were it sat in the lot insisted on getting rid of it right away, so they put it out in the street before we could get it  and damaged it beyond repair via forklift (think banana). its basically a flintstone car, not much too use on it, certainly no metal. but i now have a good second window crank and a wiper knob (all one year only)

Post by: karl h on November 27, 2014, 08:57:02 am
two nights ago i removed all the bolts holding pan and body together, as well as the Z-bar attachment. it now only is connected by some welding at the left front quater that some idiot did there.
pics of the rust, some daylight to be seen here

Title: Re: another 67
Post by: karl h on November 27, 2014, 09:00:21 am
i removed the doors and they are in an amazing state, no holes whatsoever
the pan has some "pin" holes.
i removed all the wires from the trunk, maybe i have time to pull the engine tonight.
stay tuned

Going to blast the shell? Plenty to be getting on with, but still all the factory seems and lips are there so you know how its all stitched together.  ;)

Title: Re: another 67
Post by: karl h on November 27, 2014, 09:27:19 am
i blasteted the shell of my oval (nut and bolt resto), but found it hard to duplicate the factory paint in terms of rust prevention. so no, i´m going to cut out the chanels and replace them and touch as little as possible of the factory paint (only on the rear quater panles and wheelhouses hopefully)

Hi Karl,
Glad to see you are working on "another 67" bug now - looks like it has great potential to come out nice without too many hassles !  Hopefully this one will be with you a bit longer than the former Fontana-grey 1500...
Alfred

Title: Re: another 67
Post by: karl h on December 01, 2014, 11:49:54 am
Hallo Alfred, thanx for dropping in. hope you ride your bike past my garage soon!
some more work done, engine is out. doesnt look to bad inside the heads (no sludge). lots of valve clearence.
a squirrel looks to have called the engine compartment home for some time, there are opened hazelnuts everywhere....
if i have to open up the case, i may install 85.5 P/Cs and late 1500 singleports along with a 31PICT - a real firebreather ;D

the chanel is out, the new one bolted to the pan, the heater tube fixed

.....aaaand we have touchdown
it dawned on me that maybe this thread is more rust-repair at the moment than cal-look :-\

Rust repair is the hard work before the fun starts! Looks like it;s coming on well. What is the ultimate plan for how it will look?

kaferboy, just look at the beginning of the thread
thanx for the kudos

working my way around the lower parts of the car.
maybe i can finish welding in the next couple of weeks and have it painted in january :-\

I've done the other side of that panel recently, put the hinge mounts and vents back in. Arse of a job, isn't it!  :D

you can say that again! i welded it on the bottom first, then bended it inward to get primer to the welded area inside, bended it back and then did the lip.
nice job on the vents.

Post by: karl h on December 31, 2014, 17:02:59 pm
at first i thought i can save the passenger side heaterchanel, but it turned out to be more work than it was worth. so i welded in the bars to keep everything aligned and started to cut out the chanel

stay tuned

Title: Re: another 67
Post by: karl h on January 10, 2015, 13:08:08 pm
passenger side is in :P
just some more welding on the firewall and spare tire well and the body is done

Post by: smurf67 on January 13, 2015, 21:55:37 pm
Looking good, and moving quicker than my 67 project. Out of interest I don't suppose you still have the heater channel vent from the driver side do you? If so would you sell it? I have the sliding door part etc just need an original vent for behind it. Cheers Alex

Title: Re: another 67
Post by: karl h on January 14, 2015, 07:36:42 am
both cut out heater chanels are still in the trailer (to be hauled to the trash), i can take a look. but i think the drivers side vent crumbled because it was rusted apart on the bottom. the passenger side one is fine, you can have that. maybe it can be used on the left side? i, on the other hand, am missing the sliding part on the drivers side.

Title: Re: another 67
Post by: smurf67 on January 14, 2015, 08:36:34 am
Hi Karl if you have either side that would be great I'm sure I can work something out so it fits :) I may have a spare door at the workshop  my car is at unfortunately I won't be there again for a week or two now but if I find it your more than welcome to it. Cheers Alex

sorry for the bad pics

the lower framhead and the napoleon hat will be replaced too.
if you need the replace the latter be very carefull that the stamping of the repairpiece has the same height as stock, or else the body wont fit (thanx for telling me that, Alfred!). i will only use the lower part and keep the stock upper curvature

pretty happy with the paintjob.
cant say that for the pan, the framehead is in catastrophic shape. dont want to use one of the aftermarket units, only bad things are heard of these...

aahh looking good, another nice 67 in the works...wil you be at the eurobug -in ?

Post by: karl h on February 26, 2015, 10:05:06 am
no bug-in for me, just too far to drive and i´m not sure the car will be finished :P
more work done on the framehead. i replaced the lower 10cm with a donour piece (thanx again, Alfred). with the beam bolted up to the upper part you can get the lower part dead-on without any danger of misalignement. careful fitting is in order to line everything up nontheless

nice car but are you leaving the front end and it's rusty parts or will it be changed?

Title: Re: another 67
Post by: karl h on April 07, 2015, 07:12:36 am
thanx guys
i thought long about the undercarriage. the pan is done new, but if i detail the rest of the parts (they are just a little rusty as most parts down there are), i´m not going to drive the car this summer. i had a bus and an oval that had completly detailed axles/brakes/etc., but i was reluctant to drive them in foul weather. where i live there is bad weather year round sometimes, so again i would have a garage queen. this will be a DRIVER. if i feel like it i can pull the front beam and the trans and detail it over next winter. just getting everything mechanically correct now.

Title: Re: another 67
Post by: leec on April 07, 2015, 08:27:39 am
You could detail all that in a day. Do it now as it will be harder to take it apart when you have finished it and driving it, trust me I know :)

Title: Re: another 67
Post by: RobtheManx on April 07, 2015, 09:07:05 am
Karl , I commend you for leaving the undercarriage undetailed . I was planning to do the same with my 67 , as I was determined it was going to be a driver , but I gave into temptation and cleaned up the lot . Its only brush painted satin black , looks ok but I know I will be waxoyling it soon .
The road from my house to my workshop where the car will be kept is a farm road and always muddy , it would break my heart if I spent time and money mega-detailing the underside only to look and see it shitty and muddy !

I'm pretty sure very few of the original cars we all love had mega detailed undersides !

Thanks , Rob

Title: Re: another 67
Post by: karl h on May 05, 2015, 07:25:59 am
some progress, but a big step backwards, the motor has a spun rodbearing . i opened it up and its basically junk >:(
got another F motor and collected a late 1600 cam and oilpump, 35X32 single port heads, a 6volt bus flywheel (200mm) and an aluminium 356 oilcooler to put it together ;D
still a long list of details to finish too

Title: Re: another 67
Post by: karl h on May 28, 2015, 06:55:45 am
these are the parts found in the engine, a part of the rodbearing was still between crank and rod, but most of it was gone.
the (matching parts) block can be saved, pistons and heads seem to be reusable, but crank/rod/oilpum etc. is junk

Title: Re: another 67
Post by: karl h on May 28, 2015, 06:59:53 am
so i built the "vintage speed" motor, just like out of the "Gute Fahrt" magazine (thanx Alfred) from 2/1966
here it is on the stand

Title: Re: another 67
Post by: karl h on May 28, 2015, 07:04:20 am
car is now pretty much finished (i have to find a working 6V horn and a better rear bumper)
it has definitely a period tunig flavor to it with the silver rims without hubcaps, michelin 155s and the stock stance
after the inspection i will lower it and put the Berms on ;D
sorry fort the bad pics, it was pretty darn last night under the carport, will take some in the sunlight this afternoon
