Title: Cable brakes
Post by: Jesse/DVK on January 11, 2018, 00:51:58 am
As i’m looking at a new beetle a 55 standard oval has come up for sale. Always nice a factory cal looker. However these standard models have cable brakes. Nice for 30hp but not if you want to put 180hp in it.

Is it possible to convert to hydraulic brakes? If so is it difficult to do?

Thanks Jesse

I think from what I've read and how I understand it that none of the original stuff can be used, and you have to replace it all. However, it is a straight swap. I know Lil Stink hound on here did a swap on a 60 standard so he will probs know more.

I seem to remember lofty1971 (Mike Joy) converting his '58 Standard, but I've had a look on here and can't find much detail. I know I sold him a pedal assembly as the original one can't be used, and I'm pretty sure the handbrake needs modifying as the cables work all four wheels.
You'll obviously need brake backing plates for all four corners, master cylinder, pipes and all the rest of it.
Go for it. Factory Cal Looker? No brainer!

I think the best thing to do would be a pan swap.

Yes,also think it is better to swap the pan.
And store the original one.
