Not much today. Just looking out the window at my 68 Bus is pretty much it for the day. I will be staring on a 4.56 geared transaxle for it soon though.

Went out tonight and installed the valve spring shims I picked up from Eddie at Painter's Grinding when in Denver for the Bug-In. They carry steel shims that fit the valve spring cup in the head correctly and go under dual springs.  Finished up my valve job and have a small flycut to make before putting the heads back on my freshened up 2275.

I went to work in one. I will have to get back home in the afternoon. As far as more exciting things are concerned, I will need to fill the tank on my way back.
I have to admit that I don't have much time for some extra activity on my Beetles now. But I'm glad that I have one that is operational and I can use it. Driving them is a part of the hobby, isn't it? ;)

I purchased the car from a friend that has had it for the last 12 years, he was not able to get it finished and I was able to purchase it,  the car was restored to stock 27 years ago. 12 years ago the car had the original drivetrain removed and a Der Trans Axle built and installed, adjustable front beam with disc brakes and it has a Roger Crawford engine that was built for it that was dyno run only and needs to be installed. I'm looking forward to getting it together and driving it.

Just put a spark plug in the bung when you're done reading mixtures and tell people it's part of a flamethrower kit. Any butterhead rockabilly will tell you that flamethrowers and girls covered with sideshow tattoos are traditional.

That's an option. I'm trying to think of off the wall stuff I can do to really confuse the masses. I wonder if I can get a small enough flapper (like on a tractor trailer stack). Or maybe a whistle?

I have some spare time to work tonight on my 1600 rebuild.

I messed one of the threaded hole head stud while tapping it to M12. I have to use an M14 insert to save it.

I drill it, gradually using larger drills. 11mm, 11.5mm and 12mm.

I used a drill press to be sure I was drilling it square. It's a cheapo drill press, but it gets the job done.

I didn't have T handle tap holder larger than M12. I bought a bigger one, and it's just ridiculously big  :D Look like something to work on steam machine. ;D

I have to remove one of the handle to tap it.

After doing the 3-pass threading, I cleaned all the holes and inserts with brake cleaner, blow them and put everything together with red loctite.

Not on any particular car, but the engine area in my unit is nearly finished! Rather than filling the space left by my '51 with more stuff, we've built a solid bench, blocked off some windows, lined the walls, added a strip light overhead and last night got the parts washer and engine stand ready to put in place. Just need to paint the floor and trim the worktop down.

So I should have space ready by the weekend to strip down a 1600 motor as a stopgap before the Sweep The Floor special. This thing always ran really strong, but really hot too, so I want to find out exactly why. Maybe cam timing? Whatever, it'll have a little more head work, and with the Scat C35 cam and 40 DRLAs it should be entertaining enough!

Pick up tube came out of case, lose of oil pressure, guy keep driving, got hot, damage was not to bad, lifter bore went south, Berg fixed the pick-up tube,  and rebushed the lifter bores, and they also honed the barrels cause of scuffing, and DPR polished the crank. All new bearing and rings. Should be good to go. The lesson was learned, all good now.

We managed to fab up a new muffler set up, really happy how the muffler tucks up under the rear apron.
I now have an extra 25mm of ground clearance, oh and it sounds tough as too.
Will paint it up on the weekend.

- left rear window regulator repair in 2010 jetta ... cool that the outer skin comes off the doors in these vehicles for any internal repairs needed
- repaired a power steering fluid leak in a 2002 Eurovan ... exhaust had rubbed and worn thru hard line on steering rack - replaced and bled
- overheating problem on 2003 passat 1.8T passat - replaced thermostat and replaced sealing o-ring on heater hose at rear flange to repair upcoming coolant leak
UNRELATED to VW activity, but replaced a broken ignition switch rotation-input assembly on a 2006 Jeep Liberty - saving he customer over $600 compared to the dealer
- traced down an electrical short in a 2005 passat TDI wagon to the instrument cluster - pulled cluster for warranty replacement
- at 6:20pm a woman arrived with a "sticky brake' problem with a '74 super beetle ... turned out to be a failed outer wheel bearing on the left front. Had to heat the race RED HOT just to free it from the spindle! cleaned up the spindle with emory cloth and replaced both bearings. Adjusted the brakes and checked over the vehicle as she was headed home, over 80 miles away! She was back on the road in 1 1/2 hours, lucky we had the parts in stock.

Walked in thru the garage finally home at 8:20 pm after arriving at the shop at 7:48am earlier... right past the blue car hardly looking at it.

Another day in the life.

I'd have to agree that I'm in the dermatologist club as well.  Three surgeries last week and the one pictured below was 4.5 hours on Wednesday, Oct. 03.

I really wanted a sunroof car when I purchased "The Green Monster" back in May.  Now I'm thinking I made a wise choice in not seeking one out.

A friend came over who was having difficulty disassembling a bug engine.  He got it down to a short block, but couldn't get the flywheel or the Berg pulley off.  Years ago I purchased a Coopers tool from Kymco.  You probably know it better these days as a torque meister.  The Cooper was the original and it worked great although we had to use a cheater bar anyway.  That baby was on tight.  I had made a puller for the Berg pulley a couple of years back and it worked as well.

This was a 1915 built back in December of '94.  I know because it was stamped on the case.  It was built by a shop that I didn't recognize either.  They used quality stuff.  It had a Berg sump as well.  and a counterweighted crank.  Pretty cool.  It always helps to have the right tool...!

I worked on my bay window to strip it to bare metal.
I used some chemical stripper that a Polish friend gave me. No idea what is written on the bottle  :D
(http://static.skynetblogs.be/media/123253/2040084841.jpg)

But the thing works quite well  :)

I still have to sand it to bare metal, but it quickly remove 2 layers of old paint. The white one is the original paint which is much tougher than the 2 later respray.

I also polish the combustion chambers of my 1600 engine. First time I did this job. Took a lot's of time and I don't now if I will do it again  :P

Thanks Matt, yes, it's Dupli-Color Trunk Spray, Black & Aqua DM 109. Ordered it at O'Reilly's. Takes a long time to dry, put worth it. has texture to it, kinda covers up the imperfections, I like that part. It is differrent, but old school, I like that part also.

JF, do yourself a huge favor and get a 3M coating-removal disc. Here is one for reference:

http://www.finepaintsofeurope.com/store/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=10 (http://www.finepaintsofeurope.com/store/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=10)

The pads attach to a hook-and-loop (Velcro) backing plate for a car polisher. You can use a high-speed grinder but I advise a variable-speed car polisher. They do not cost much more than a grinder and the pads work best at slower speeds where they will not overheat the panel.

I stripped my wife's Baja with these discs. I had to soften the top coat with chemical stripper. I did not have to strip that entire coat, though. Just scrape off whatever the stripper loosens and then use the coating-removal disc.

This car had four coats of paint: Ruby red, white, a very thick layer of sticky brown rust-preventative primer, and bronze. The bronze was sprayed in the 1970s.

This took a weekend:
[attachment=1]

This took a few evenings. It was unnecessary but I thought I might as well go all the way.

Thanks for the advice.  :)

I have try a lot's of differents things to strip it. From 80 grit on a DA to 40 grit on a variable speed grinder ( BOSCH Pws 13-125  super tool and a must have to do bodywork for any DIY) . Works great but need lot's of care. It can put a lot's of heat on the panel and wraps it and dig quickly in the metal.
I also try different kind of wire wheels, both on a grinder and a drill machine. I found one from KWB that works quite well and really remove any rust. Metal looks like it had been sand blasted.

The problem with this project is the paint used on the 2 respray it has received. It clogs abrasives discs like crazy  :P

Hey Jean,

You have the same problems that I had with that Baja. The primer under its last coat of paint turned to glue when I tried to strip it by conventional means.

As you have discovered you should never ever use a coarse abrasive like 40 grit on a grinder on a body panel. They hurt far more than they help. And once you use that coating-removal disc you will laugh at the idea of using a wire brush to strip paint. That disc was designed to remove paint and sticky materials like asphalt-based undercoating. Your paint will not even come close to clogging it. Your paint will not stand a chance against that disc. And if you use it properly that disc will not warp metal. It cannot gouge it either.

Those discs are so good that I used them to strip the paint off my HOUSE! And you probably know how gooey latex paint can get if you try to sand it. I really recommend those discs. They saved me so much work and grief.

Got the heads off my 1600. The head studs ended up coming out of the case - couldn't get the nuts off without the use of a vice and patience! ::) Then looked at the heads - hemi cut. Balls. >:(

Well look at the bright side. Now you know why it was hard to jet, ran hot when pushed, and drank so much fuel!  ;)

Well, my motor fired up, NO leaks, timed it, checked oil pressure, all very good, now for some jetting, and I'm good to go. Big relief.  ;D

As the weather is exceptionally mild (24°c on Monday! ), I took the opportunity to continue working on my van.

It starts to look like something better that a patchwork of old paints  :D

This probably DOESN'T apply, but I'm installing a CRAZY 3" turbo-back exhaust system into an '06 BRM TDI Jetta ... NO muffler! It's CRAZY loud under power!
Already has BIG turbo, injectors, intake ... blah, Blah, BLAH ... tune & now finally the exhaust.
CRAZY!
