Driving Hot VWs for 44 Years Strong!

« Reply #39 on: August 10, 2012, 09:09:19 am »

Went out tonight and installed the valve spring shims I picked up from Eddie at Painter's Grinding when in Denver for the Bug-In. They carry steel shims that fit the valve spring cup in the head correctly and go under dual springs.  Finished up my valve job and have a small flycut to make before putting the heads back on my freshened up 2275.

went to LowBugget last night and got one of those little wire basket cup/crap holders that fits over the tunnel so I won't spill my coffee every morning. And a couple of strainers to keep my oil happy. Pretty exciting stuff!  Grin

It's been a few days ago, but I went to Prairie Hill Dragway to catch the first post-resto runs of Bill Stipe's "Stuttgart Express" - lots of pics and info at http://cal-look.no/lounge/index.php/topic,14870.msg270054.html#msg270054

Took my 67 for a cruise down to Alex (DefCon 3) Taylor for a jibber jabber.  Tried on a different wheel.  Didn't like the look, so staying with stock...for now.

I went to the "Prefecture" to do my last toy French title (because my car comes from Germany).
So now, that little 1974 bug with 100.000 original miles is mine !

I went to work in one. I will have to get back home in the afternoon. As far as more exciting things are concerned, I will need to fill the tank on my way back.
I have to admit that I don't have much time for some extra activity on my Beetles now. But I'm glad that I have one that is operational and I can use it. Driving them is a part of the hobby, isn't it? Wink

I purchased the car from a friend that has had it for the last 12 years, he was not able to get it finished and I was able to purchase it,  the car was restored to stock 27 years ago. 12 years ago the car had the original drivetrain removed and a Der Trans Axle built and installed, adjustable front beam with disc brakes and it has a Roger Crawford engine that was built for it that was dyno run only and needs to be installed. I'm looking forward to getting it together and driving it.

I drill and tape a case for case savers and realized I used the wrong tap(m12x1.75 instead of 1.5)... Bought an oversized case saver (m14x8!) to save the job.

Just put a spark plug in the bung when you're done reading mixtures and tell people it's part of a flamethrower kit. Any butterhead rockabilly will tell you that flamethrowers and girls covered with sideshow tattoos are traditional.
