Title: VALVE SPRING PRESSURE AND CAM GEAR
Post by: Cesar Franco on November 11, 2015, 01:31:23 am
Good Day.

How far can you go with the valve spring pressure before needing straight cut cam gears?

Thanks.

ok, Ill bite into this....  I have run FK 87 and 89's  in the 70's and 80's with Chevy dual, as well as triple springs, with no adverse problems running a stock cam gear. Not sure if this will help you in your answer but perhaps in the right direction..?

You know a while back Hot VW's did an article on this subject. They discussed whether straight cuts were needed and talked with several different racers about what they used (valve spring combo, cam bearings, cam, the results and why they chose straight cuts or helical gears. I remember being surprised that some of the racers were using helical gears. I have to find that issue I have been meaning to re-read it....

Many years ago I read an interesting article on straight cuts in the V8 world, and how a lot of engine builders were avoiding them, since at certain revs they introduced extra harmonics into the valve train that the more usual chain drive didn't.
The article might have been funded by a cam chain manufacturer, I can't remember now.
