My goal 2 months ago was to have my car (67 Beetle) racing in Vegas. Now there are only 2 months to go and I still haven't made much progress. My schedule has opened up so I think it may be possible to still make it happen. I have never built a motor of this caliber but I don't doubt my skills, just my knowledge. I still however would love to have input from you guys in hope that I will be cruising down the 1/4 in Vegas.

The goal is a 2276cc n/a pushing 200 hp on pump, 10:1.

Here is what I have so far.

AS 21, full serviced by Brother Mach Shop
Okrasa 82mm, Porsche rod journal crank
Mahle Main bearings
Carrillo rods(no rod bearings)
12 lbs Fly wheel, gland nut
Magnum Straight Cuts
SLR VW 130 Cam-108LC/ @ valve- .585 lift / .312 duration
Dual thrust cam bearings
SLR lifters
DDS oil pump (not sure what size, I think 30mm)
94mm Cima mahle p&c's
Berg 3.5 sump
Stock 10mm Studs
Scat 1.4 rockers
Scat Tracks
48 Ida's
356 oil cooler w/an external cooler w/fan pack
36 horse shroud
I have (what I was told was a) berg disk made by Sachs and a Kennedy stage 1 pp

What I plan on getting:

Mantton tapered push rods (option/ maybe HD alum push rods)
Steve Tims Sig. welded race heads 42x37 valves
Total seal 2nd ring
Teflon coating on the piston skirts???
A1 1 3/4 exhaust

I plan on Pre assembling the motor complete, then final assembly. Break in cam on an engine stand. Hopefully take the motor to get dyno tuned, throw it in the car,car on the trailer, then Vegas Baby.

Give me your input guys, I would appreciate it.

Sounds like a nice combination. It shouldn't be too hard to make it to Vegas, provided that the rest of the car is ready to go.

The car was a running driving car before I bought it. I bought it minus the engine. The car shouldn't need much, probably just brakes and some little stuff.

I've always dug this car.

Just do it.
You guys have come a really long way in a very short time.  If I lived closer, I'd probably be divorced and sleeping on somebody's couch.

I can't wait for the BRM's to be fitted, but they still need to be detailed, motor needs to happen first. I also have a set of M&H's in stock, so I'm good there Smiley

Spent last night checking my main bearings. I started by installing bearings then torquing the 6 12mm nuts down to 34 ft lbs, then the 2 8mm ( #4 bearing) to 18 ft lbs. Checked the bearings with a dial bore, #2 (split) bearing was out of round .0025 !, all other bearings were round within a .001. I noticed I could see light beetween the upper and lower (#2) saddles. I lapped the ends of the bearings,  that brought the roundness down to .0004. So here are my #'s I think my bearings are a little too tight, not to sure how to fix it? Maybe a hone? What do you think?

Main Bearings trq 35ft lbs:
#1- 2.1671 #2- 2.1656 - 2.166 #3- 2.167 #4- 1.577

Crankshaft Mains:
#1- 2.1644 #2- 2.1645 #3- 2.1644- 2.1646 #4- 1.574

It looks amazing!

Carrillo rods(no rod bearings)

Give me your input guys, I would appreciate it.

Hmmm, I would use rod bearings. The engines tend to work for more than 5 seconds if you use them.  Wink

Thanks for the props. Vegas will be fun if the car makes it or not. It's lookin a little unlikley, now that the bearings are giving me grief.

Took the case to Steve Holingsworth  @ VW performance, and he confirmed the case was warped. I made a call to Brothers Mach, They said sorry, and the would take care of me. Looks like Vegas will not happen, but O well that is life some times. I will keep you guys up to date. Thanks for you help and input.

Steve has the case, he is going to try and fix it. Either way it won't be the foundation for this engine.

Your high ! The AS-21 is in a box on a ups truck on it's way back to Brothers. They will do all the machine work I paid for on a different case, I'm thinking of going with a brand new AS-41, so hopefully I will have no more problems (fingers crossed).
