Title: Pics of lookers on 14" fuchs?
Post by: Jos on November 07, 2014, 07:45:34 am
I've got a set of 14" Fuchs in the garage and wanted to see if anyone has pictures of them on an old school looker. Are there any iconic cars that ran staggered 14" and 15" rears?

If they won't look right I'd like to get them in the hands of an early 912 or 911t owner and keep looking for a set of 15"s (these are so much more budget friendly though.)

My '70 is not iconic, but I have been driving it everyday with 14" & 15" alloys . . . front tires are 175/65 R 14 . . . . rear tires are 165/80 R 15 . . . . turns and stops fine.
I will replace the rear tires with a larger size at some point.
I have my adjusters quite low . . . the only thing that drags on occasion is the stock anti-roll bar.
It still has drum brakes all the way around.
LMK if ya want to see a photo.

Of course I'd love to see photos! It's never too late to become iconic :)

Real cool! A '70? Looks very similar to what my '68 will sit like with them on there. (only my '68 is red)

Thanks! I really enjoy driving it!
I need to get some spacers (10mm?) for the back along with grinding the end of the axles in order to fit center caps.
I think it would look better with larger tires in the rear . . . . maybe 195/70 R 15

Post pics of yours when you are able, ok?

Only thing that sucks about 14's on the front is you can't use drop spindles :-\

I noticed that in the other post. Is it possible to shave down the spindle some or where is the interference?

On the bottom ball joint. Some 15" wheels require a little shave to the ball joint, I don't think there's any easy way you'd get a 14" to fit.

Jim Moore's Notch was on 14's, then I put 15's on it.

Jos - or any other else having 14" original fuchs - could you please weigh them as I can't find their weight from any of the usual lists.

EDIT: Thanks a lot Jos, and for us non-imperialistics - 11lbs is just 5kg.

Puavo

I have a set of 14" Fuchs for my bug that hopefully I can install sometime next year. They are still in decent shape with the anodizing not worn through, so maybe I can just repaint the black areas of the rims in satin black...and find 2 more center caps. The 14's are supposed to fit a link pin front beam with dropped spindles, according to a few on the samba. Fingers crossed.

@Larry S, do you recall what size tires you were running on your 14's? I realize it was over 31 years ago, so no worries if you don't remember.  ;)

Thanks,
Andy

It seems to me that the selection of 14" tire sizes has improved since the eighties.

Dave, yer car is lookin' GOOD!
Larry, your car looked great also!

That looks good. I've got a set of 14's & 15's, was planning on running a 175/70 up front. It will fit the wheel perfectly, and be only a tad shorter than a 145/15.

That looks great! Thanks for the info Dave!  :)

I can't believe the pricing on some of the 14" tires. I was looking last night online and you can get some decent (name brand) rubber for as little as $45 per tire, depending on where you look. Of course you can probably get a $145 tire if you wanted to as well. I was surprised at the selection of tires that cost $50-65, when I'm used to paying $80-100 per tire for 15's.

I'm happy with the look of 14's & 15's (see below)
For the record, 155R14 is only slightly taller than a 135R15

I love the contributions so far guys! Makes me grateful to not have to spend 4k to have a nice set or rims :) I agree with you Dave, that combo works really well on VWs

Dave, I don't remember the size of the tires, I think 145's up front, I do remember they were michelins, seemed to last forever and I used them like a $2 whore.....
