Title: Gearbox advise
Post by: samotorsport on August 27, 2020, 00:57:06 am
Looking for some advise on a gearbox for my project :
Mostly street use , very few non prep 1/4 mile runs , engine 2,1 - 2,3 liter with around 140 hp , leight weight bug with mostly stripped interior .
7x15 wheels in the back with something like 205/55/15 wheels plus minus ....

Not yet sure about putting in a lsd or not .
I still have an AB gearbox which could be used as a base .
This has the short 4,3 ratio which might be too short for my usage .
So what do you guys think ? 3,8 ratio ? What set of gears to put in and where to get them from ?
Or skip it and getting a Rancho straight away ?

I have a Rancho pro street with 3.88 RP so basically a Superbeetle swing axel with a cheap Kafer bar. It’s been working great! Shifts are solid and no drama whether upshifting or going from 4th to 3rd at 100kmh, it just works.

My KCR box has developed a whine, and doesn't stop till the bug stops. I hope it's just  a wheel bearing . Not looked yet.

I’ve had a bad rear wheel bearing but can’t recall the symptom.
How many miles/ years on your box?

About 1500 miles. Lol. Maybe the motor has damaged it somehow

That’s normal for a new transmission. Mine did that too and settled down with more use. What oil are you running?

Mine’s 5 years old now and seemed to get quieter every year.

I'm wondering if it's coming from the 4 spider gears after I raised the rear up a spline. The Axle driveshafts are on a bit of a positive angle. That will promote oiling to the wheel bearings so doubt its those, but is the positive angle affecting it at the gearbox somehow. I'm going to re adjust the rear, to lower it, see if it changes anything apart from the height.

I found a traction bar was a great way to transfer gearbox noise up into the cab.
