I guess some of you might have seen this RC classic before, or remember them from you were young. I never had one of these when I was young, I did however have the Tamiya FROG. A couple of weeks ago I came into possession of a pretty nice Sand Scorcher chassis, so now the part hunt is on. During the hunt I stumbled on these cool photos from Southern California...early eighties....  how cool are these??

That's a nice r/c car! Makes me feel like having a baja bug in 1/1 scale.  Smiley I always wanted the Tamiya Hornet as a kid. Now they did a reissue of that car, maybe I'll buy it now!  Grin
They also reissued several "old school" r/c cars like the Lunchbox or the Grasshopper. Maybe they do a "collector's edition" of the Sand Scorcher, too! Would be great.

This is truly candy for old R/C guys like myself! I had a Sand Scorcher once...and a Sand Rover before that...with a cool cowboy looking guy behind the wheel, but with a measly 6 volt 380 engine and the on/off switch stupidly placed underneath the car. Think I broke abot 2000 of those before selling it on and getting the Scorcher instead. I search the net my self from time to time to satisfy my nostalgic side. You'll be sure to come across endless parts on eBay, but be prepared to pay about 10 times as much as you did back then. Cool

I forgot about the 67 bug that I brought a few years ago now when tamiya released it a while back, I spent sooooo much money on that thing - fully ball raced, electronic sped controler, alloy dampers, alloy steering arms etc etc etc I painted it up like "STREET DRAGON" it looked awsome Cool - still got it too but the shell is in a bad way and it has a snapped wishbone  Sad

today the weather is bad in Hamburg. Since a few days the chassis is running. So I decided to start building the body for my 2010 Sand Scorcher. Beginning with the front fenders, but they are not ready yet. Also worked on this great dash board. Have a look on my pilot. He was painted by Frank Schmitz. Thanks for that buddy.

Cool! Is the Frank Zappa driving? I used to have one too. Got mine when they first came out and eventually modified it so much there was 3 original pieces left. If any of those avtually get used LOTS of things will need to be upgraded.

This was my first R/c car... if i can find the pic ill post it of me crawling around the floor chasing it...... i still have it to this day just no body... i remeber a few years ago when i had my baja bug i was going to build it to be exactly like mine when i was a kid (all red with all the stickers in place and "506" on the door) and have the sand scortcher to match. So at that time the cheapest NIB body i could find was 200-400 bucks and NIB kits going for 800-1200.... never ended up picking up a body nor painting my baja to match Undecided

Well, it took alot of digging around in my garage, but I found the pictures taken while testing my brand new Sand Scorcher at Hobby City in Anaheim way back in 1981. They used to have an R/C off road track located behind the hobby store (now a kiddies amusement park). I remember being pretty stoked to get to play with it on a REAL track. Up until that point, I was running it around a vacant lot in my old neighborhood...

That was then...

This is NOW!  Shocked

30 years later, a little worse for wear...

Replaced the stock plastic wheels with cool aluminum aftermarket wheels.

[ Attachment: You are not allowed to view attachments ]
Unfortunately, the chassis was long ago modified from stock (cut up radio gear box, aftermarket shocks, etc).

But luckily, I have the original box FILLED with enough junk to maybe restore it back to stock...someday!  Cool

Also have an untouched NOS replacement body sitting in a shoebox just waiting for some paint!
