Title: Post a shot of your pre CAL LOOKER...if you go back that far...
Post by: rick m on May 30, 2009, 08:56:10 am
Here is a shot of my first 66 Bug that we built primarly like an autocross car.  It had a 92x74 motor, initially with a Holley Bugspray 2bbl. Crank was a plain bearing crack with VW rods, all balanced with a lightened flywheel.  Bought my first parts through VICTORY Auto, next to Niello VW in Carmichael, California.  First motor had a SIG ERSON cam and rockers, stock valve ported heads, fortuned exhaust and close ratio box built by Don Ward (Der Wagen Shop) in Orangevale, California. I ran American Racing mags with G60x14's in the rear and Bridgestone racing tires in the front. It had flared fenders and all the stuff we were doing to bugs in the late 60's and early 70's.

That's another car that reminds me of a cool toy Bug from the 60s or 70s.  I'd love to put something together with that look today.

I'm to young to have built a pre-cal look car ;D but my uncle built this when I was 4 or 5 years old and it's my first motoring memory

Rick,
Unfortunately, in '72 my house burned down and I lost most everything (including pictures) prior to that. But, in keeping with the "pre Cal-Look" theme of the thread, try to picture my ride in '69....
It was a '63 Kombi that was up-dated to a 1500 with (what I was told at the time) a factory header. I had the bus painted (for those OC guys who remember) at Hennig off the 5 @ South St. The color was GM Inca Silver. Prior to paint I radiused the rear wheelwells and glassed in flairs, added side scoops and removed the bumpers. Once back from the paint shop, Cal-Custom was the first order of the day for the interior(got it all at White Front). 13" steering wheel, pedal covers, shift extender, knobs, handles, AND spray-on window tint! Got a a pair of 7" deep Chevy pattern Keystones (a slot mag like Ansens) and some huge tires from Maloney's for the rear and stock, black painted, rims w/nipples for the front. Returned the front bumper without the overriders and painted it black,,,didn't use the rear bumper because I liked my white "header" to stand out. The center binding was also done black with a matching silver VW emblem up front.......I wish I had some some pictures to post,,,although, the interior would really send you up a wall

Bill,

I was laughing hillariously when I saw you in the early 70's look. WOW!  Check out the attached shot of me with my Navy bell bottoms and my first chop top in 1970. Flared fenders and all.

OK, I can't pass this one up.....................
My first VW was a 1961 and after absorbing the Empi catalog back then (around 1966), i installed the Zenith 2 barrel at quite an expense.
After i got tired of that, I decided to put in a Corvair motor and had great fun with that. Because the Corvair runs backwards from the VW, I flipped the ring gear over and soon nuked the trans. Dean Lowry had left Empi and opened his own shop and I knew he ran a porsche transaxle so that's the way I went and, in fact, he supplied me with a set of hand built solid mounts off the Inch Pincher.  (Just thought I would do a bit of name dropping to establish how long ago this was)

At some point I saw a bug with the back windows filled in and thought it was so cool and so....................

Oh.. it ran in the mid 14s with the stock geared Porsche trans............nothing spectacular but it sure looked and sounded intimidating.
I had a lot of fun with that beast. It was the 140hp model with a cam, a little head work and some awesome custom headers made by Phil's muffler in La Habra.

Here  is a shot of my 66 before I did the flared fenders, lowering and orange paint job. It was originally the factory red color with the american mags on it. This is a shot of my 66 and a buddy, Jim Erickson's car a 1967 as we were goofing off on the Salt Flats in Utah.  We took a little spin on the flats while visiting some friends.  Notice the pinstriping on my car (on the right) and the tinted windows.

This was late 1970 before I transformed the car.
