Title: Looks like I have a new project :)
Post by: Lee.C on July 22, 2007, 00:02:57 am
well I've been talking about it for a while now and its finally going to happen - in a few weeks I am going to pick up my new project car.

A very solid 1966 Beetle - and the best bit is I still get to keep the Manx  ;D

Cool! Nice to hear that the Manx is staying.
But I hope you got that 66 really cheap, it's got the steering wheel on the wrong side!  ;D
Kidding aside, it looks like a nice project. Congratulations.

Thanks for the awsome response guys and your right it is a superb starting point for a Cal Look project - it has had 3 NOS 1/4 panels fitted and it even has the original heater channels with NO repairs  :o

I can't wait to get my hands on it - I have quite a few COOL ideas and parts  for this project and i don't think you boys will be disapointed  ;) :)

As far as colours go I am still undecided - it WILL be a 70's porsche colour - I am looking at Willow Green OR Bahama Yellow  ??? ??? ???

What do you think guys ??? ??? ???

P.S I glad i'm keeping the Manx too :)

if you not joking about that offer to store the manx that would be AWSOME - It won't be for a few weeks yet though  :)

And yeah pop round anytime - I am dying to see the oval in the flesh, I've only seen one pic and it looked awsome  :)

nice car monki...but my opinion is that willow green is too similar to green of baywindow buses that i always hated.too german rather than californian ;) ;)
bahama yellow instead would be perfect!!!!!!! just too similar to "butternut" john lazenby car.

all black leatheterette interior. padded dash with black vdos, black motolita, bucket seats. detailed 5 and half fuchs ( too much 4 and half on the front on this earth. a new project need something different...not buying rare things at immoral prices for rule). fiberglass rear hood. chrome glasspack. no firestones...just michelins..that is an article that you will pay much but u will use every cent. zx 145 on the front. xwx 205 on the rear. one piece window, berg shifter.    you could do one cool things. all black inside. that is black vynil skyliner, black carpets but also black body internal paint: i mean that when you open the door you can't see the colour of the body on the doors, on the dash and around the wind screen. all semi gloss black. that is real seventies....very modern at that time....often used on race cars as anti shine finish

all black even in the hoods. obviously the part of valance covered by hoods have to be black too.

chrome buggy bars cause you are a buggy boy ;), total dechroming, only handles and light rings left chromed!!!

lucas signals. you need three!!! two for front fender and one with yellow bulb on the padded dash as idiot light.

bronze tinted rear glasses. that's all....... 8) 8) 8)

i think that those nice xwx are available in smaller dimension too. you are right about 205s. they used to have smaller tyres in 70s. but when they raced they used that big blue streak (nice to have them monki....look at bob woodman tyres site, they are good for the road too!!!)

The fact they do both a 205/70 15 and a 155 in the same type of tyre is a bonus. The Michelin's are different which is a pain but then again they do the 145's. Just been through all this and in the end went with Bibendum. the speed rating on the Vred' 155's and the Mich' 145's is the same. :)

Sorry for the off topic Lee, but there are a few other things to fix at the Selecta to.
The most noticeable is the window sizes that grow bigger between oval and 58 model, in reality the side windows are the same size up to 64.
It's not an easy task to make a bug look right in a flat 2D view, but I would think the sloping headlights would be more visible.

It's a cool program nevertheless!

Talking of old school engines, was talking to JHU on the phone last night. We came onto the subject of full flow filters. When I think about it, I have never seen a HP1 hanging from the rear bumperbracket of any of the early cars..When did this "trend" start? When did people start using full flow systems on theyr cars, and what kind of filtration did they use on the small cc IDA street motors from back in the day..

Hi Rune Most all the Cars Back then either Ran the EMPI oilPump filter Combo Or an HP 1 Filter system most of the cars had them tucked up in the fender well and in the later years  they mounted the oil filter adapter on the traction bar with the use of a u bolt if you look behind the rear tire on the chop top  you can see the oil filter or also the 67 most guy's mounted them down others mounted them sideways

For the true period look, I'd save the old stuff, melt it down over a primus stove and re-use it. But what do I know?  :D

I was able to get light grey seam sealer from my autofactors.  You can brushable and cartridge.

I used light grey too. I masked off where I didn't want it and then squeezed it out of the cartridge with a gun. Once I'd got a bead of it on the panel edge I worked it in with my finger - messy but most satisfying! (I just know someone is going to quote that out of context!) Best NOT to wear latex gloves - they tend to stick to everything. You'll also find every sharp edge, point and spike of welding wire that you thought you'd got rid of...

Hi Lee tiger seal is good thats what I use. its white and easy to use you can lay a bead down and wet the tip of your finger and smooth it out as you like, it drys hard over night you can get it in most automtive paint stores
