First official public unveiling.

I wuz gonna detail it out, but Maize wants me to run it as you see it, like some sort of farm implement.  I think he's a little worried about the orange car not being the only local hot rod anymore.

LOL at you guys.  Thanks for the support.   :D

The real thanks goes to "Ohio" Tom Simpson who put it together from a bunch of boxes I brought him in November.  Specs:

90.5 x 82mm
Rimco Super Rods
AS21 case
Web 86b/1.4 rockers
CB lifters
043 castings worked by K-Roc
40x35.5 valves
9.5:1 compression
48 DRLAs

Tom claims I'm gonna love it...he's probably right.

Quote

I knew it was missing something!  I'm gonna call Tom and have him take the shiny, new fanshroud off and throw it out in the yard for the rest of the winter, too.

Mike, I'm stoked for you... can't wait to hear how your new engine is going to perform. It also sounds like you're onto something new. A way to answer back to those feckless hoodriderustedoutresto shells that roll on the streets. We'll do the opposite of them and have good looking fast cars but with really weathered haggard engines. I'm never cleaning my engine again. Where does one buy spray on rust?

 ;D

Joking aside, enjoy your new toy.

Why not paint it now?
Just a little effort compared to what has been done so far...

Title: Re: Java.... is your motor ready?
Post by: javabug on February 19, 2009, 20:05:32 pm
I'm sure it will be out of the car next winter; very likely will get a dose of "pretty" then.  Until that time it will be run this way in honor of all the Mark Herberts in the world.

Besides, painted and shiny would clash with the rest of my car.    :P

Title: Re: Java.... is your motor ready?
Post by: javabug on February 19, 2009, 20:23:14 pm
Thanks Jim, but honestly my car needs a TON of work.  Maybe if the running gear was all refurbished, and the interior was a lot nicer, and...right now its a real bomb.  I'm hoping this season to get some of the obvious stuff squared away.

Maize's car, now that would be worthwhile.

Title: Re: Java.... is your motor ready?
Post by: Jim Ratto on February 19, 2009, 20:28:08 pm
no, I think cars that post some fast e.t.'s and work as a car, despite being not the shiniest or most surgically clean rides out there, need some print. These buffoons with hoodrides are getting ink, aren't they....  by chopping 6" width out of beam, pouring acid on their paint, and sticking air pillows under their cars for "the look"...

A good looking (!) hot rod car with a bonafide hot motor...  why not?

Today's world is a different place, after all....     how's your economic stimulus plan working out?  ::)

Title: Re: Java.... is your motor ready?

Having a car I built featured used to be a goal of mine, but not anymore. The highest recognition I could have ever gotten for my work and my ideas was when all my peers on this board gave my 67 props, after all these are the people that "get it" . That said I am always open to people taking pictures and asking questions about my cars.... ;) Mike I think the way your car is is what makes it so cool. Its Punk Rock -cal-look, especially with the new "balsy" mill hanging from it...... I thought of Herbert as soon as I saw the picture Tom sent of your 2110.

All good points, and I definetly agree on having killer street cars in better public view would be a great "change" to our scene.  Just give me this summer, maybe I can have the

It's in Pennsylvania now.  Further posts as events warrant.

Demo run on Tom's test stand.  Yes, its loud with the stinger and the camera is not expensive enough to deal with the noise.  No, I don't intend to run the stinger on the car.

Thanks to Maize and Swingle for making the trip without me as I got sick enough to make me stay home.  Hope you guys got a good look at that, as it doesn't happen often!

You would have needed pretty high end stuff because it was LOUD in that grage with the stinger on it :o My ears are still ringing. Do you have the picture showing all three engines in John's truck? Roughly 600HP in the bed of a Honda Ridgeline was kind of cool!

Title: Re: Java.... is your motor ready?

I'll have to try a screen capture of the three engines from the video at John's house.  It definetly looked cool.

I can't wait to hear it with mufflers on.  I am motivated to get it in the car, to say the least.

I couldn't get a good screen shot here at home, so here's the whole video of 6,600cc of VW in the back of a Ridgeline:

Should be back in "permanently" by the end of the week.  Plumb the oil lines, wire the fuel pump, and we'll see what happens.

Good morning.   :D

Yeah I've been getting some miles on it when I can, and working out the "fresh engine blues."  Just haven't had a chance to get any pics or video yet.  I will say that it runs great, sounds awesome, and I think it might be fast.

Thanks for asking, I'll try and get some pics and a video up for you guys soon.

Here's a pic as it sits now after a couple hundred miles.  I tried a video but it wasn't coming out so good, this might have to do for now.  Runs real strong, good fun to drive.  Some carb tuning wil be needed next year as it seems a little rich.  But it is totally driveable as is and I've only worried about getting some miles on and making sure all is well.  I have a Bosch 010 for it, just needs a clean and lube and that will go into service.

When I get a good transmission, the tin will get painted and things detailed up a bit.  I guess I am pretty happy with the install, it came out clean~ish.  Feel free to critique it.

NICE! Only thing I'd change is paint the shroud black. Cool you're adding a Bosch .010 distributor, too.

check the tin fitting around oil cooler with motor out. This is how I had to modify mine round shroud:

Yeah 181, I had to tweak mine a little, and around the "cover" for the cooler in the back, as it was no where near fitting!

Title: Re: Java.... is your motor ready?
Post by: javabug on November 30, 2009, 02:56:28 am
Burning gas and  rubber now.   ;D

Ripper, the mufflers are those sold by CB Performance.  They're pretty nice, but you can see that for perfect fitment I will have to do some work.  I can't answer your traction bar question as mine has not yet been fitted.

Title: Re: Java.... is your motor ready?
Post by: Jim Ratto on November 30, 2009, 18:58:10 pm
I really like the mufflers. They appear to be a (much) larger muffler than the typical "dual quiets", same with tailpipes.
How do they sound?

Title: Re: Java.... is your motor ready?
Post by: javabug on December 01, 2009, 14:42:43 pm
They're quiet.  No, really...they seem to have a good tone, but it stays underneath the carb and valvetrain noise.  I think you have a point about the mufflers being larger, as I'd like to get them tucked under the back of the car more but there doesn't seem to be much room before they hit the extractor.

it does look like that from the photo...also why i was wondering about it hitting the traction bar too. maybe an A1 lowdown header might help ?

Hi Java,

your engine looks nice. I used the same CB dual quites up until 2 years ago and was really happy with the sound and performance. What I didnīt like too much was the fact that it doesnīt really hide below the fenders and rear valance so I cut the piece from the flange to the triangular gusset and shortened the (1 5/8") header about 1 inch as well so I could use a bigger flange and - in my opinion - better looks. The engine worked quite good but it felt that from 7000rpm upwards it could have been better so I decided to farbricate my own dual quiet mufflers with bigger tubing. Interestingely it didnīt really help. ;) I think that the mufflers I used were more restrictive than the ones used in the CB system.
Bye,

Tobi

Hi Tobi, thanks for the words.  Your car is a favorite of mine, so that was nice to hear.

It is interesting to read about your home-built duals, as I was considering making some, but if you didn't notice much improvement then I may save my energy.  I doubt my combo needs to be over 7k rpm much.  I do intend on some cutting and re-fitting however.

it does look like that from the photo...also why i was wondering about it hitting the traction bar too. maybe an A1 lowdown header might help ?

Ripper, if I get a couple minutes tonight I'll crawl under the back of the car and have a look around for you.

Looks like there could  be interference if the muffs tuck nicely under the car, but think it will all fit together just fine.

Alrighty ... small update here. Straightened out the muffs, fit them under the fenders a little better, and a new coat of paint. Traction bar is also installed, and everything is living together under there in relative harmony. This will be the season of fixing lots of little things.

Car is looking great. I am excited to have mine back after its surgery. I haven't even driven it yet this year. Hopefully the improvements during the winter will help and the "test drive" bad luck collision didn't effect it.

I hear you about busy summer. I am still waiting for my 66 and still waiting to drive it once. Anytime you want to come down. Love to show you the car. I still can't believe it is sitting in my garage. Have some things I have picked up for it already so we are moving ahead. I got a replica of the Berg shifter for it....Bent by Mark Voegtly and I just received a set of Berg axles for the car. I would have parted out my 66 to get the car done already but I would have regretted it. Hopefully you can come down when the 66 is here so I don't have to drive my stock patina'd 60...haha....There is nothing like a two litre....

I do need to get Ohio Tom's number from you when you get a chance. I am trying to get my motor parts in order.

Thanks

Larry

Back and forth, tuning, swapping jets, etc., all summer. Finally had a very satisfactory day at the track yesterday.

Car ran a best of 13.60 @ 97 mph, and consistently 13.75 – 13.76 most of the day. Drove 60+ miles to the track, took the tools and spare out of the trunk, ran it hard all day, and drove it home. Can't complain about that.

Hey! Another year goes by, and everything is finally the same color.

Mike Maize came by for a few hours today and he straightened out my bumper holes so the new rubbers would fit right. He also straightened out my apron that had a large curb dent, so I had to make him an extra cheeseburger for that effort.
