Hey Sarge,

It was great to see you at Bug-in 34!  I did not know that this site exsisted until today when I saw a picture of my '67 sedan along with Jim Holmes's and Dean's cars in front of FAT back in the mid seventies on a signature line from the FASTBRIT.  I haven't looked at pictures of that car in 30 years!.  I got back into VW's a few years ago when we acquired the Java green '67 vert, the '50 sunroof and we just got a '67 SO42 westfalia.  We still have the red '64 356 SC that I brought by your work 4-5 years ago too.  Anyhow, thanks for the welcome and I intend to stay in touch with my old buddies again.

Regards,
Jim

Dave,

You are right!.  VW folks are the greatest in the world.  I have a collection of cars and when we moved from CA to AZ 4 years ago, we ran into Frenchy Dehoux at a porsche meeting, (my buddy for many years in CA) who immendiately came to our home and helped me take care of my rides and got me back into VW's again.  My wife and I love our VW's more then any of our other cars and I have to say it is because of the people.

Jim

Welcome Jim! Your car is one of my all-time faves! Sorry your name has been consistently spelled wrong over the years! Roll Eyes

Hope you're coming to Classic, in which case I look forward to meeting you. In the meantime, here's a better version of THAT photo – courtesy of Dean Kirsten... Smiley

Jim is your car one of the 3 '67s' on the front of the feb 1980 Hot vws with the yellow and green bugs?

I think your car turned up again recently

Jim,

Where in Arizona do you live? Would love to meet you. I promoted the local Bug-O-Rama event from 84 to 2005 and finally called it quits due to having too many irons in the fire.  Just enjoying my own cars now. Would like to hook up with you some time.

Hi Ron, I think that was Mike Billings car, (they were almost identical), my car was in a container and off to Japan along with my '52 spliit about that time.

Correct... 1980 was Billings' red car. Which was featured in a magazine (VW & Porsche, I think) around that same time. If I ever find it, I'll scan that article.

But back to your car; it would be cool to see any of your personal pictures of it.

I thought so too.  I have a bunch of photos of the '67 packed away somewhere that I will see if I can find.  I'll try to scan them and make PDF's to post.

You know, that car was something else.  Back at that time, the BIG car magazine was Hot Rod and a photogragher named Dane Gingerelli came and took pictures of it and did a spread in the magazine.  He also told me that this was the first VW to ever be in Hot Rod.  We broke into the American hot rod world with a little gutter sniping bug.  I loved it!

That's AWESOME, Jim. Thanks for the history lesson. What year was your car in Hot Rod? I'd love to find that issue.

You got it!  When we were finishing up on this car my buddy, Ron Fleming pulled out a new DKP hood badge to finish it off.  When I sold the car, I took it off and I still have it.

Looks like that the photo credits in the scan above in Speedwell's post go also to famous Hot Rod photographer; Steve Reyes (Popular Hot Rodding / Super Chevy)..

Have to dig up the Hot Rod issue.

Good morning Jim. How was the Porsche meeting this morning. I received the invitation from Rich in the mail. Soon after the Classic I will stop by and remove the engine and transmission from the bus for restoration. Are you planning for the Classic next weekend.

   Take care

Hey Frenchy,

We just got back from the 356 Outlaw meeting this morning and we had about 30 356's, (we were hoping to see you there).  We are not going to the Classic as we have other obligations but tell everyone hi for us.  The bus is waiting for you.

Thanks,
Jim

356 Outlaw meeting?? You wouldn't happen to be attending the big 356 event up in Sedona this October, would you? I hear there are going to be 2-300 356's!! I live up in Prescott and I'll be making the drive up, probably in my GTV. Would be great to meet you there.
