Had a Sway Away axle snap, sheared at the castle nut.
Any tips on swapping the axle with the transmission in the car?

Seen that before, axle was stamped 99 on it, what year are yours?

Disconnect everything so tube is free from spring plate/brake backing plate etc, then undo nuts that hold tube to gearbox and slide it off, you can tap it behind where spring plate bolts on so slide bearing off at same time, then remove snap rings in side of diff then pull axle with side gear/fulcrum plates out.

To fit new one: fit side gear and fulcrum plates onto axle end, and slide it in place in diff and replace snap rings, at this point you have to make sure axle doesn't slide out of fulcrum plates at all and slide tube back over carefully, put a couple off nuts on tube to gearbox and a m10 bolt with big washer over axle bearing to stop axle sliding out at all, then put it all together as normal.

There are maybe some minor things I missed but as you take it apart you will figure out how it goes back together later

cheers Richie

Cheers mate! I thought you'd have seen this before! I bought the gearbox back in 2000 then a year snapped an axle in half a sway away, and I remember back then loads of people having bad axles!
I'll look for a number on this one! Already almost torn it down, so next weekend fingers crossed! I won't mothball the car like last time, snapped axle is what did me last time!!
On a positive the engine sounded bloody good lol
