Title: 128hp at the wheels (so far) Kadron 1915cc
Post by: Jim Ratto on February 17, 2009, 22:14:35 pm
1915, round port 40 x 35.5, Engle VZ15, 8.4:1 and Kadrons made 128hp/5500 at wheels with real thin fuel curve.

Is this sheep's motor? When the weather gets nice I want to take my car over there and see what it will do on the chassis dyno. I know it made 132 flywheel hp @ 6000.

No it is a 356 kit car that John built the engine for. Sheep's motor is a 1800cc single port.

that sounds really really good!
good ol' vz cam and kadrons, aye?

it was just a simple 40 x 35.5 motor, stock rockers, Kadrons, low CR. The guy brought it to John as a basket case from MO Fo .... you know who. I thought the hp and torque so far looked good for what it was.

should make for a fun streeter in a 356 kit car.

Hi Bill :)
they're actually CNC CB 044's that John did some work on chambers on.

get the thing back to the customer and tell him to be careful driving it!

I'd like to see what it would do with some real carburetors... at least 44IDFs.

Funny, John said he wanted a simple streeter that his customer could putt around in. I advised him on the combo...

Oops.  ::)

amazing! what could it be that gives this engine so much power?
it is a lot more than you'd expect from looking at the specs.

i'm hoping another combo you advised will work as good  ::) ;)

Thatīs like 150-160hp on the flywheel  ???

It just sounds "wrong", I would have guessed that combo at 100-110 at the flywheel. A 1915 with a VZ15 cam and 40x35,5 heads and kadrons putting out that big amount of horsepower(150-160), just sounds insane.

If it is showing the exact horsepower, then it truely is impressive, no doubt!

Im guessing that this is a joke, right ?

no joke.

John normally does hot rod 911 stuff. He knows his way around assembly. I think it is a recipe that just works. the carbs have venturies that have been opened to 34mm, hence the big mains this thing needed to fuel it. Looking at a fuel curve of 12.5-12.8 on last pull. The VZ15 is not a "tame" cam by any means, look @ duration @ .050 and advertised... see how narrow that spread is. I've used this cam before in under 2000cc and have always been impressed, no make that, amazed, at how it screams. I've been saying for 15 years, the VZ15 and kadrons with small ports are a mean combination. I know, I know... 'what about valvetrain wear, what about lifter bores, what about all that noise?'....  yeah, well , how about them numbers?
I had customers running this cam in street cars @ BH, never had a valvetrain failure.

Not sure about the carbs. All the involvement I had has been over the phone. The jets had been drilled and marking ground off, so John dug thru his stuff and made some work. who knows what was in it.
The specs are... VW case, c/w VW crank, VW rods, Vz15 straight up, Cb lifters, Cb CNC 40 x 35 with chamber work, manton tapered pushrods, Vw rockers, swivel feet, 8.4:1, full flow 30mm pump by me, some backyard 4 into 1 header, 009, nothing really magic.

Could be the results of high lift short duration, high port velocity. Just my guess.

John said he'd get me the sheet sometime, gotta fix a printer or something. After his driving impressions, he said it comes into its own around 3800 and he took it to 6600. he said it will ride the rear snubbers thru 3rd gear. How much does a 356 glass replica weigh, anyway?
I'd like to see him do this to a real 356B or something. For the amount the Porsche guys spend on machine work alone you could darn near double the power and give them some ulcers on some backroads. Damn VW's  ;D

Hi lawrence, John said to give him a call anytime... 510 724 6944

Going to take fan belt off today and see how it runs on the dyno today.

I can see that this is not another "internet engine" haha.

A.J Sims claims some impressive numbers with Kads so it must work then in combo with other stuff of course. 8)

yeah this was another one of those motors "that shouldn't work", like some of the other weird crap I've jammed together, like my high school motor.

last time he had it on chassis dyno it made 139hp @ wheels, with belt on and 185 mains. he's trying to tie up a few cosmetic issues in the engine bay, and make a cold air duct/air box under 356 decklid to keed Kadrons and quiet them down. The maybe a real header and muffler, then it gets to go home.

John's customer is still driving the wheels off of it. It had an electrical glitch in ignition swith that was killing voltage to ignition that it just came in for. Motor still strong as a bear.

did you ever get the dyno sheet for it?  i know it was over a year ago but im really interested in building a similar motor if its running that good

I did my first motor with 044 "ported" by myself, Kadrons, stock 1302 cam, org. gearbox... This thing did the needle of the speedo into the oillight. So much fun. Never had so much fun again.

We have a customer that went through several combinations (very close to stock) on a 356 kit ...
Finally, when the last burned up a cam, he decided to go for more.
I put together a 76X90.5 (1955cc ... perfect for this kit ;)), 40X35.5 with mild portwork and chambers by myself, 40idfs choked down to 32, and an Engle 120 with HD Berg-modded stock rockers .... compression set at 8.8:1.

As posted earlier, would run 'on the snubbers' through 3rd gear. An absolute BLAST to drive!
Guy still has it ... this was 3 years ago! Runs the crap out if it at all times and nary a problem after all those miles! ... only normal maintenance, couldn't ask for more ...

I'm thinking those cars can't weigh in at much over 13-1400 (?).

BUT, still rather run a Spyder ... now we're talking FUN ;)

Another question would these cams with a fast ramp promote good cylinder filling.
