Hi guys.
I'm looking for a top pully off a 912/356 to fit my bug alternator.
It comes in 3 pieces.
Thanks   G

Pelican parts still sell new OEM pulley pieces for the 912/356.

They are junk. I highly recommend finding an original.

What makes you claim they are junk? I bought the 3 pieces and it is high quality unit. The fit and finish are what I would expect from Porsche.

They do look nice but I've seen 3-4 of them end up spinning a pulley half (in a very short time). My guess is the pulley isn't made out of the correct steel. I've yet to see an original do that.

I haven't bought one yet.
Been busy with other things,
How much would you want for it.
Thanks G

Hi Airspeed.
Got your pic.
I have a question.
I'm going to run this to get more cooling to the heads.
I run a type 4 with up right cooling.
The standard top pulley is fitted to the alternator in a back to front manner so as to align the top pulley with the bottom.
would this 912 pulley you have fit on to the keyway as I have described above.
If you could try this for me and it fits without interfering with the alternator i'll buy it.
Thanks G

Not sure what you mean by that, but I have a stack of original porsche shims with it as well and you can use this under the first pulley halve to shim out both halves forward to align something. Thats how I used it also for my modified crank pulley trigger set-up.
I don;t think you should (or can?) reverse mount it, but there's no need either imo.

Walter (airspeed),

If you use a type 1 upright cooling on a type 4 engine the pully s (on the generator) don t line up, so that why they sell a 'reversed set up' for a type 4 engine. they switch the inner and outer pully halves (normally the inner is welled to the hub) on this set up it is loose, so they switch the outer to the inside and because off different offset off the they than line up.
But as you said I think the 912/356 pully is already in 3 peaces (not welded to the hub) so if you shim them they will line up. Right?

Good morning Garrick,

The parts are still available directly from Porsche in the UK to order, I got quoted a two/three day turnaround from ordering.

Found the part numbers from here:

Main Group 9: Electrical Equipment- page 512, items number 6, 7, 8, 10 and 11

http://www.porsche.com/all/media/pdf/originalparts/en/E_911-1_KATALOG.pdf

item 6:   (quantity 1 off.)   547 09 304 hub
item 7:   (quantity 1 off.)   539 09 315 pulley I (inner)
item 8:   (quantity 1 off.)   539 09 326 pulley II (outer)
item 10: (quantity 19 off.) 539 09 314 spacer
item 11: (quantity 1 off.)   547 09 303 nut

547 09 304 - x1          =£21.82 inc vat

539 09 315 - x1          =£25.93 inc vat

539 09 316 - x1          =£25.93 inc vat

539 09 314 - x19        =£32.15 inc vat

547 09 303 - x1          =£19.67 inc vat

Hope this helps, at least you have another option. Smiley

All the best,
Martin. Cool

Hey Martin thanks for the info on the pulley.
I'm still unsure if the main hub part will fit the alternator in reverse order as described above by Eddie.  This way I could just get the hub 1st an see if it fits then get the other parts.
Thanks G

Good evening Garrick,

Do these pics. help you a little more? The inner half as far as I am aware, would be the notched half under normal circumstances.

I would offer to stick them on my engine, but am about to go on holiday shortly Grin so wouldn't be able to do it for a good few weeks.

(Don't know if this will help, http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1199564 , it's an alternator conversion kit for a 356/912 that uses a type 1 alternator, so at least you know the pulley has a chance of fitting in it's regular configuration).

All the best,
Martin. Smiley
