Title: Rallybeetles
Post by: Jussifin on January 06, 2010, 20:05:12 pm
Anyone intersted in rally with beetles?  In Finland we drive rally with beetles on wintertime and summer also. There has been many rally beetles 1302, 1303 and some custom(1300 with IRS)and 1200 etc from early 1954-. Now the winners are coming back as restored into the historicrallies! New rules allow that the modifications can be as in the old cars, but the car does not need to have a racing-history. So if we dont find an old rallycar, we can do an similar one.

Today we were testing one totalrestored 1302 S -72 + one old racecar 1303 S -73. Both are with drysump 1.6 engines 46 and 48IDA:s, racegearboxes, splilimiters etc etc. The testroad was 5 kilometres long specialrallyroad and there was about 30 other historicrallycars also testing. For example: Ford escort RS 2000 mk1, Mini cooper, Mazda RX-7, Sumbeam avenger, Porsche 911, Volvo 142, Ford cortina lotus, Golf GTi mk1, Ford escort sport 1600 mk2, Mercedes 280, Bmw 2002Ti, ... etc all very fine and fast.

Weather was very nice with lot of snow and only minus 27c when we started testing...

With a small counting i find over 12 fine historicrallybeetles here + more is coming soon + some type3.

Also we drive here with a 1302 S beetle in rally F-class with a little bit more free regulations, testing for this seasons begins on this weeks saturday at the same place.

Winter = rally, summer = dragrace + circuitrace with beetles ;)

I would love to see some pictures, hear more about preparation of cars, etc. The rally side of VW hotrodding is very rare in states.

Thank you!

You can find a video of Jussi and Eki racing their rally VW in the following video (~6.5 minutes long -- Type 1 VW at ~5:25)

Here are a few pics of Juhani L's 1302 Beetle that he used to own and race in a vintage rally car series. The rally car is awesome - super clean inside and out, full cage, race seats, belts, etc. It "only" has a 1600cc motor as per class rules, but it's sporting IDAs, big valve heads, lots of compression, and plenty of performance.

I was lucky enough to get a ride in and drive this car last Fall, while on a trip to Finland. I hear that Juhani's new car is now finished - hopefully Jussi has, or can get some pics of it as well.

I'll defer to Jussi for that, as it was him who gave me the ride in the car and is friends with Juhani L. I think that the restored '72 1302 S that he mentioned in his first post is Juhani L's new car.

Here's a shot of Jussi and I after we went for a ride/drive. The big smile on my face took quite a while to fade away... ;D

Juhani L also has a couple of very nice Ovals (http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f346/57hotrodvw/Finland/Volkswagens/IMG_6984.jpg).

The orange one in pictures is old 1302 S rallycar in F-class, raced since 1986... Engine 1600cc with lightened std crankaxle, std balanced rods, 1.25 rockers, 85.5 forged pistons, ported 42/36 vw-heads, 48IDA:s, drysumpsystem(placed in the rear fender), old Bosch ignition. Puts out 129hp 155nm with belt + silencer + airfilters on. Gearbox with longer 1+2 and shorter 3+4 with an SF-splitlimiter, and from the end of 2009 season new gearbox with SF-gears with dogringsystem without syncros(=much faster to shift) Front Bilstein shocks, rear Konis, steering like the model in the late -75 1303 models. Extra oilcooler in the front with a fan which takes warm into the cabin with a gasoline heater. In this class bumbers can be taken off + extralights can be xenons.

Silver is allmost similar, only that it is in the historic class, so no 1.25 rockers allowed there. Silvers engine puts out little over 130hp. The gearbox is with syncros in that class.

Both has max speed around 150km/h.

Juhani L:s new 1302 S -72 car is also very nice and fast. The car is FIA-passed last week and it will get the licenceplates for trafic tomorrow. That car will join its  first historicrally on saturday 16.01.10. We try to put new photos later here.

There is lot of pictures of the Finnish historic rallycars at historicrallyclub finland sites and from there take: kuvia.

Jussi :)

Rallybeetles are the new "scene" in Europe. Especially FIA cars fetch very good money. In Greece we have a couple of good FIA prepared cars.

Title: Re: Rallybeetles
Post by: TSAF on January 08, 2010, 11:17:56 am
Take a look at our teams well prepared white 1303s FIA Appendix J specification as per the original Porsche Salzburg Cars. The power is being put down through a close-ratio transmission with straight-cut gears and a 75% locking ZF limited-slip differential. The suspension has been custom-made by the team, using Bilstein components and lexan glass all around. The car's weight is almost 810kg. The car's overall performance has been extremely steady. This year we will change the gas tank for an ATL racing item (ligther), we will improve the engines performance and finally a close ratio 901 with LSD gearbox will find its place to the car.

Post by: Jussifin on February 02, 2010, 21:20:55 pm
No problem, this was one f-cup rally on last summer. There was no signs of the double-jump and we hitted the place with full gas and 4th on...We damaged the car but the guys were ok, just it was not so easy to turn the head some days after this...
The beetle was repaired soon after this.

We raced on this year two weeks ago. We won the first stage against the bmw m3, ford rs2000 mk2 etc strong cars, but on the second stage the engine went broken. The next race will be on 13.2. with a total new engine or with the old reserve engine, it depends on this weeks dynoresults.

Juhani L. will race also in historic-class this weekend with his orange "new" 1302, let see how it goes...

Here is enough winter now, minus degrees all the time and lot of snow comes every day.

I'm building up a 1972 1300 Beetle for road rallies at the moment although its a long term project.

Basic specification is as follows:

Suspension and Drivetrain

- CB Performance camber compensator.
- Magneti Marelli gas shock absorbers up front.
- KYB GR2 rear shock absorbers.
- Adjustable front beam dropped 2.5"
- Uprated front anti roll bar.
- 5.5j Stock style steel wheels.
- 185/70R15 Goodyear tyres at present but will be upgrading to something a little more beneficial to handling.
- Fully poly bushed.

Engine

- 1300 twin port.
- Home ported heads.
- Engle 100 camshaft.
- CB Maxipump, and full flow oil filter.
- Single heavy duty valve springs.
- De-baffled stock exhaust with Cartune style flared straight through tail pipes.
- Reece Fish carburettor.
-1.25:1 Ratio rockers.
- Bolt up rocker shafts.

I've also got a KKK KO3 turbo, Volvo T5 intercooler and some other bits for phase two of the engine development but I'm only willing to do the turbo conversion if I can find a way to keep it looking clean and period.

Body:

Stock '72 1300 with all trim.
Kamei bonnet vent scoop.
Kamei rear vent rain guard.
Kamei front spoiler.
Raydyot front spot and fog lamps.
Europa over riders.
Door squares.
Lexan rear quarter and door window glass.

Interior:

-US Spec high back seats -  to be replaced with Salzburg style OMP Classic seats when funds allow.
-Securon harnesses.
- Fire extinguisher in passenger footwell.
- Porsche 912/4 tachometer.
- Hydraulic handbrake.
- Quick shift.
- Fully stripped interior painted in gloss body colour with black chassis.
- Oil pressure and temperature gauges.

 :)

I know...  :(

It will be used for Clubman Level MSA events here in the UK. I'm only 19 and a student at present so an FIA prepped car is way out of my price bracket. A full on Salzburg specification 1302 would be nice someday.

Juhani won his class on last saturday, marginal for the second  was 29sec. His beetle 1302 worked 100%, there was lot of snow and minus 7. A very fine day. The other fully rebuilt 1302 dark red, Villes superfine car was there also (the first rally after been rebuilt), but he slipped from the road into the deep snow on the 3rd stage and there was no helpers, so  his race stopped there. Type 3 notschbacks there was also two, one -65 1500 S Ari and 1600 L -71 with IDA:s etc driven by Jukka, both finished this rally nice.
Those both 1302 beetles + one more Kimmos also dark red 1302 will be in the same rally after 2 weeks, interesting to see how they will survive.
One metallicsilver 1303 will join also the HANKIRALLI next week.

I try to find links for pictures when i have little more time...

We will go to rally with Ekis orange 1302 this saturday. The new agressive engine was in test today, just so little too late. So we will drive with old  little uppdated engine this time and we will start hard testing with new engine after this rally to be fully ready for our last winter cup-rally next month...The F-cup includes 3 winter and 3 summer rallys in Finland, + there is many-many other possibilities to join the other rallys.

There is more timeinfo at tenab.net   Jämsä f-cup    f-cup seniors...
We drive in the senior class(drivers over 45year age) the problem is that the older drivers get free minus-time before the start. The older the driver is the more he gets advance-time. So the easiest way to win the cup is to be over 65 years old and drive carefully to finish all the races... 70 is the limit to drive, after it you can not get the licence to race. Eki is just too young for winning the cup easy.

The f-cup is for all kind off cars thats why it is very interesting and all the cars are fast. This 13.2. race was fun and again we reached the Ford easily on 14.9km specialstage. They started 1 minute before us and after we reached them, we drove long time behind them to find the place to drive past...

At one special stage we drove also out of the road into the deep snow, but luckily there were people near us, so they helped us back on the road again -but we lost so much time so the topplaces were gone. At the last specialstage (29.9km) we started after BMW and same situation again, soon  we found BMW:s rearlights in the front of us, then it was dark evening and after that car lot of snowdust in the air, so it was not easy to even see the road. We drove two times on the snowwalls but luckily again we didnt drop out of the road and then the BMW guys found a place to give us space to go past. After it was easy to continue to the finish and we got the second fastest time of that stage :D

Beetle worked 100%, weather was minus 15, only damages were; right runnigboard is now dead and one frontfender and rearsideplate behind the door on the right side needs some platework...

Next race 6.3. should be with the total new engine...  Some photos at  jp.galleria.net  and  rallikuvat.net   orange beetle number 101

Juhani L. made it again!!!!!! He won the historicrally-class today with 40 sec marginal to Ford... and was total 9:th on the race. Not bad with this 1302 with 1.6 rallyengine and IDA:s etc.

3 races in 2010 =

-1.st race =>stopped with broken frontshocks and broken pushrod

-2nd race=>1.st place!!!

-3rd race =>1.st place!!!!!!!

Congratulations for this fine work with doing a total new historicrallycar and nice drive again!

Here are a couple of recent videos and a few pics of Australian Greg Ward and his hillclimb car.

Greg is the 2009 New South Wales Hillclimb Champion in the "Improved Production 1601-2000cc" class. That in itself is awesome, but even better is the fact that he drove his race car to and from tracks all over the country - no trailer required.

Nice picts Eric! You should come here also to take some...

Last news:

last week we finished with F-class beetle 1302 in the 5:th position in seniorclass winterrally. The car and team worked 100%, but with that timehandicapp-system we had no chance for better positions -only thing to go upper now is to get beetle faster...hah-hah.

Kimmo R. drove yesterday historic-rally also with a 1302 beetle (dark red), he finished fine 2:nd in class and total 6:th!!!!
Very fine raced for a guy who has just started to drive historic rallies in this season.

In that historicrally 1.6 class we can see that old-style IDA-beetles are very fast.

Now it is going to be little a pauss in those races, only small races + rallysprints are before may. So now it is time to develope more...

Also we are doing a complete new-style of historicrally-VW... -will be ready soon!

The show is over, now begins the driving... The new IDA-idea is a Karmann Ghia coupe -68 for historicrally. The car is fully equipped for historicrally with all FIA-allowed parts in there. Engine is a 1.6 type1 with IDA:s + all racetuned, gearbox with all racegears and splitlimiter. Interesting set up for rallyroads... i will join historicrally + rallysprint with this soon.

The other Ghia is made for circuitrace and especially for  the Finnish Urhonajot which is a 6 hour circuitrace for only aircooled VW:s! Normally that Ghia is in top 3 in those races. The type 3 is the Finnish "ratataksi" = ciruitracetaxi with subaru turboengine etc all race goodies + 6  raceseats !!!

The red historicrally Ghia will start rallyuse soon  -in the next month.

DIG THIS!!!! Just in;

Jussi took his 10 second drag race engine from his 51 split (#1 on Top Racers list the last 3 years) and mounted it in one of his rally cars and won his class. The others did not stand a chance.

Here is some facts how reliable my street-engine is. I joined testing/licenseday at the Alastaro-circuitracetrack with
simple-kombination: the supergood 1303 circuitracebeetle ex.Anders Fridh + team ( i have owned this car for some years)
now i added my old type 4 engine from the streetbeetle.

ONLY modifications i did was:
-changed the 30mm oilpump into my old drysumppump
-changed the racestyle electricfan back to this 911 fan which i normally use on the street
-changed the Kennedy1 and Black Magic into a Kennedy2 + sinterplate
-put a silencer on

I drove as normally with std pumpgas shell 99 all day long on the track. We drove 5 sets of 8-10 rounds per time(normal cupraces here are 8-10 rounds)  +  last extra set was only 2 rounds like sprintrace. The laptime at cold asfalt takes round 1.35. The car worked 100% all the day while i drove past all the other cars which were on the track at the same time...BMW 325, Golf racecars etcetc.  At the last start from the startline i found that the clutch was slipping, so that maybe needs some attention, but i finished as 1.st.

So, if someone still wonders if that street-engine is driveable/reliable - i think this shows something of it. Would be nice to see how many of those other low 10sec street-engines will hold at the real streetuse or circuituse some kilometres...

New ideas with IDA-engines are allways fun!

Jussi  ;)

Cool deals, Jussi - both the Ghia rally car, and the fact that you stomped the competition with your street car motor in the circuit race.

Congrats! (http://cal-look.no/lounge/Themes/babylon/images/post/thumbup.gif)

Hello Jussi
hats off man for the achievement, really impressive for a first time new engine package on a rallye car, what can I say. Keep it that way and continue amazing us with your work. By the way you're an "anxious inspiration" to my mind, everytime I see some pictures or videos of your cars I want to start a new rally project, maybe the time has come?

I think it's a shame to use an engine like that only in a dragracer, it has so much more potential like rallying, street driving, circuit racing. keep up the good work jussi ;)

Excellent job Jussi! Well done. I don't have it down to '10 seconds' (yet  ::)) but I also use the engine both ways (drag and track) and even in the same car  ;D

Can you imagine if you start using EFI with that  ;D

I am doing these aircooled beetles every day, so it is fun to test different ideas between the "normal" VW:s. This 1303 car suits 100% for the Finnnish circuitraceclasses, so in this season the car will be seen at the hard raceuse also with those BMW:s, Ford, Porsche etc + V8 cars on the same time at the track...
Ghia goes this weekend into the Lahti Classic car show and then after the show starts the racing with it. I am an oldstyle builder so maybe i keep on driving with the carbs. IDA:s are so simple...

For all the hobbymen it is also important to drive with these hobbycars on street or races.
Try different cars and find your own way to go: dragrace, rally, circuitrace, rallysprint, cruising or what ever, the driving gives you energy to develop more!

Get your VW:s running, summer is near!    8)

Hah-hah, plasma is my friend... very easy and cuts metal fast.

Today we had one more very Finnish vw-happening: URHONAJOT. 6 hours circuitrace for aircooled VW:s.  It is very funny and there is fast many kind of aircooled VW:s. Karmann Ghia typ34, beetles 1302, 1303, 1300 bodies, plasticbodies, type 3 etc. All look different but all has good safety equipment. Engines there is std type 1 , strokers, oxyboxers, type 4, carburators, injection etc. Regulations are quite free, but it is still very interesting and the guys can use imagination... Todays race was little different because it was so called quaiet day on the Ahvenisto-track and max desibels were only 95 / 4000rpm. It was not easy to do, but all cars managed to pass it.
Todays winner drove 170 rounds of that track in 6 hours, the result tells how tight it was because the second drove 170 rounds also, but they lost winning by finishing 150metres behind the winner. Third took only some round less. This is the happening, which you should be driving also. Feel the difference of this happening and atmosfere. Cars must be fast, reliable, quaiet AIRCOOLED VW:S with VW engines. Drivers here drive like gentlemen, we have had not any crashes, but still the competition is tight. We can give more info if someone is interested to join or develope this kind of happening. This has been here for past 10 years now and keeps on going strong!

Its amazing how the drag race engine lasts at the circuit track.  Me at other hand, i am getting built "safe" monsterengine for autobahn, nickies, oilsquirters, TP heads etc.
