Title: What does your garage look like?.....
Post by: Donny B. on September 01, 2007, 19:32:28 pm
I subscribe to a number of Auto Mags and one thing I always get a kick out of is seeing the garage that some of these cool cars come out of.  Sometimes they are like a professional shop but often they are small cramped and crowed with parts and tools.  A lot of times the walls are covered with memorabilia.  Show me your little slice of heaven.  This is mine, this is where I put my '66 together.

That is a pretty well outfitted hobby shop.

Edit: Here are the pics of my work shop. Just a modest two car garage but I am working on slowly converting it into a well outfitted shop as money allows.

My work space. I have a couple of fold out tables I use too.

The "other side". Hopefully in the next couple of months we will be purchasing a storage shed so most of this stuff and all the spare sheet metal will go in there. That should free up some more room.

My latest addition, a real honest to god work bench with a vise. You don't know how long I have wanted this but other things always took priority. My wife finally surprised me with this a couple of weeks ago. I added the vice two days ago and as far as I am concerned, its the greatest thing since sliced bread.

The parts pile gets organized. I think that was the real motivation for my wife buying the work bench and the shelves. She was tired of the garage always looking like a tornado hit it.  ;D

Next on my list is to buy a welder, install some more lighting, a beer fridge and paint the floor. I am looking at that new por15 garage floor refinishing kit and everything I have read looks promising. Once done I will be a lot closer to being ready to get serious with the '67 resto.

Here's out it looks full and I also have a fenced in side yard that is concrete 18ft. x 36ft. approximately.  I have room for my future projects there.  Hopefully some day I will be able to fund them.

Looks good Ken! Where abouts are you now? Looks a bit different from your place near Reading – I bet the neighbours all stood in the street and cheered the day the removal men came! ;D  Neighbours never seem to understand... ::) :D

I reckon they did, although i've still got that house at the moment, we're now on the coast road just south of Hornsea, East Yorkshire, no near neighbours, sea views and plenty of storage/workshop space, couldn't be any more different from the old place, should be up and running properly (part time at the moment) by the end of the year.  8)

Dogs and garages just seem to go together. This is Bear, my year old Dachshund/Maltese mix. He decided to pay me a visit in the garage while I was working tonight. My wife's Golden wouldn't bother unless there was food involved.

I put the bug in there as soon as I could! Its a shame we're moving otherwise it would be all painted first!

My garage...

Unfortunately it's very easily filled (but it does give a nice view at the bottom of the garden! :D)

Not a lot of room for project cars though...

The problem with a big garage is you just fill it up with more stuff. Only age will make you realize you will not be 150 years old so 10 cars will be plenty. My problem is I can not throw anything away so I keep getting new storage places all the time. How many front beams does one guy need? 25 is a nice round figure. Cranks? 200 hundred is my limit.Engine cases? 35-40 ? will it be enough? Why is it so hard to just chuck old stuff in the garbage? You tell me, I just cant do it.If a bolt has kamax written on it I feel like a criminal throwing it away.I do have good days when everything  goes in the garbage that can not be restored. Any more people ouy ther with the same problem?

Post by: speedwell on September 15, 2007, 22:41:52 pm
yes  same problem for all  ;D , we store al stuff we have and we don't use , and because we think that one day will need some , and then always with this statement which one day they will become difficult to get  ::).... ;D

Title: Re: What does your garage look like?.....
Post by: louisb on September 16, 2007, 02:00:58 am
Actually, I tend to get rid of stuff then end up needing it. I sold a complete 2332 long block w/ flanged crank, wessco pistons, scat rods & cnc heads two years ago because I didn't think I would use it. Now I am regretting it.  :-\ I have also sold off sheet metal, hoods, doors, decklids then finding out on my next project I could have really used it. Oh well, easy come easy go.

Here are some pics of my new improved work shop. I used to have my Ghia stored in a garage with no light, no electricity. Now my girlfriend (she owns the 66 Resto Cal bug and half of the 71 DeLuxe L), our buddy Jörg (59 standard, split standard) and I have 150 square meter. Sounds like a lot, but we filled up most of the space already.

Still not everything in place, but we are working on it. Will post better pictures as soon as if it looks better. BTW, the Jetta is Jörgs daily. Usually his 59 standard is blocking the space of the Jetta in the picture.

Our three cars: My girls 66, my 69 Ghia and our 71 DeLuxe L

The last picture indicates why a heated garage is nice in Norway. Mine is fully insulated with heated floors :-)

Go LED lights Frenchy, The damn buzzing kills me on the neon/Florescent lighting, your electrical bill will be less and I like the "brighter" light the LED's give.... COSTCO had a sale of them last month and I bought a few to try them out, now after hanging them up, wish I had bought ten more LOL

(This old guy can't have enough lights LOL)

I would look into LED flour fixtures too Frenchy. I have installed them and it amazing how much light they put out with almost no heat. In fact if I was building a new home my whole house would be LED. That is the way my house here is. My electric bill was cut in half after LED installation. You should also look into solar panels. They are becoming more and more efficient. Just my opinion.
Frenchy do you still have the NSU?

Go LED lights Frenchy, The damn buzzing kills me on the neon/Florescent lighting, your electrical bill will be less and I like the "brighter" light the LED's give.... COSTCO had a sale of them last month and I bought a few to try them out, now after hanging them up, wish I had bought ten more LOL

(This old guy can't have enough lights LOL)

I don't know if it applies in the US, but over here, electric appliances got a noise rating. Even for neon lighting, wich can be the noisiest things in a quiet place and drive you nuts lol. Bzzzzzzz....

Once done I will have my 4 speakers mounted on the edge of the upper deck you can see one of the smaller speaker to your right..

This is my workshop looks like...
Nothing fancy, but get the job done  ;)
The '99 New Beetle is my winter beater, waiting for a new passenger side window mechanism, will be done this Saturday, the bay window is, well, a work in progress and the '65 Dart is a fun grocery getter  ;)
It's a cold dusty place, but I have about every tools I need and enough room to work on multiple projects  :D

My garage, The BossHogg Speedshop...scene of horrendous engineering mishaps, and crimes against paintwork. Desperately needs a clean and the floor repainted

Constant 15C all year around. Zee Germans really knew how to build concrete constructions. It will be taken down sooner rather than later and it will not be easy to find anything close to the facilities we have today for the money we pay.
