Title: Turbo Town Shootout 17-19 th of June 2011
Post by: Ragtop on October 13, 2010, 18:24:30 pm
Turbo Town (Västerås Sweden) are planning a race weekend at Kjula dragway in Eskilstuna. We will have our own VW Test n tune class  and our own camp at the track. We will race with old dragrace cars which are mostly American. The event is organised by Rod n Kustom, http://www.rodnkustom.se/

We will have more information come closer to June.  If you are interested or have questions about the event PM Ragtop and I will answer your questions as best as possible.

Welcome fellow racers!

Yes. It is a concrete track and very fast! They have run 1.05 60s.

Here is a film from this season

I do believe a notchback is visible somewhere in the film  ;D

Is the plans just for one weekend next summer? And in that case, is it in june?

The Turbo Town Shootout is planned for one weekend, but there are many races planned at Kjula by the organisers next year and I am pretty sure that we will race at more than one race,  depending on how many VW that want to race we will have our own class at most events.

Count me in and I will be bringing a couple of friends.  :)

What time will you be coming by to pick me up, Kalle?? ;D

I got to see plenty of very cool cars from Turbo Town at SCC last year, and would love to see them at their home track. Those of you who are attending this event, please shoot & share some photos and video.

Fellow loungers!

I spoke with the organisers of the event and they would like to pre-book us to make sure we get top position in the pits. So if you could PM or e-mail me if you are planning a trip I can let them know approx how many of our cars will be there.

This is not a binding commitment.

Hi,
I will do my best to join the race. The '65 is 99.9% ready and just waiting to go to a dyno, so I am optimistic. The first test drive will not take place soon - we have a lot of snow here :(

Very much looking forward to it!

Hi all!

This weekend there is a race at Kjula, next week they will open up registration for our race. I will let you know as soon as it has opened. The price to race is 600 SEK per car/driver, extra mechanics are 200 SEK/Person, not sure what the admission fee is for visitors but last year it was 200 SEK for a weekend. It is possible to camp by the track. No showers though.

Saturday night we will have a bring you own BBQ and we will set up tables in my tent and the tents next to it.

Also we only printed 100 T-shirts so make sure you buy one when you get there, they are 200 SEK.

On another note I dynoed the notch last Sunday, 500 whp at 2 bars will make it move i think  ;D

Let´s hope the weather gods are with us

//Johan

There is supposedly a hostel not to far away and the city of Eskilstuna is just 10 km from the track. Not familiar with their hotels and but here is a site that might help.

Done, thank you! And please reserve 2 x XL t-shirts for me

I`m keeping the Norwegian delegation in the loop on our Norwegian forum and it looks like we will be a nice bunch of people coming. Some will race and some will hang around to show their support. Heck, one guy kindly volunteered to bring a 17 wrench.

One question: is E85 available near by?

We have not decided if we should bring our tent or book hotel at Eskilstuna and I guess the weather will decide when we get there. The plan is to drive from Oslo on Friday morning to be there well in time to get the car checked on Friday. I`m really looking forward to this.

Best rgs

Awesome!!  ;D

Two shirts set aside  ;)

There are gasstations along the motorway when you pass Eskilstuna going to Kjula. Pretty much everyone sell E-85 so it should be no problem to get more if you run out. Also there are some local guys racing, the can show you where to go.

There was a legal streetrace this Saturday (not in Kjula), Patrik with the black fastback had to much power for the track. The old Volvo is also from Turbo Town.

Better get your register forms sent in.

You don´t have to have a race car to run. As long as the car is safe you can run, see the rules.

The weather forecast is looking promising for the weekend. Sun on Saturday and partly sunny on Sunday - fingers crossed. They have also updated the list of cars coming to Kjula and it looks like there will be a lot to watch. Great!

After finishing the cage he decided he needed a wing...what better then to buy a fast wing ;)

I have also heard unconfirmed rumours that the Slackers has started working on the famous Losen bus.  :)

Eric, I have seen a lot of things but never a Siddis drinking Hansa beer. Or did you bring the Hansa from Bergen?

My memory is foggy (maybe from too many Hansas ;D), but the pics were shot and beers drank while on a layover in Kristiansand, enroute to Gardermoen from Bergen with the DKL crew. I think we bought food and drink at a grocery store in Bergen for our awesome road trip.

Of course! When someone invite everyone to their local track, a BBQ, music and a party I personally think it is obligatory to turn up. There might even be a chance they will return the favour and visit SCC  :)

All packed and ready to go.

I think its somewhat a shame that the vw racers out there(swedish) doesnt show up to this event (me included) when you guys put upp so much work and effort.
I said in an early stage that i would attend but moving,a new baby, and no garage has delaid my new street/race car build.
If you guys have the stamina/guts to put upp this event next year i will show upp that s a fact.'
If thers no rain on sunday i will show upp to watch you guys pull of some great timeslips. God luck both with the event and the racing

Home after a realy nice day at Kjula.

Unfortunaly BB broke one driveshaft during warm-up but was as happy anyhow. Tekken went out and did some test and tune and stopped on 10.16 today after some soft premier runns. I´m shore he will get some really good slipps later this year when he sortend out the small issues. The car is in great shape and drives straight as an arrow. Herman, allways nice ´to meet you. Ragtop did a finale round at 9,57 at the end of the day and was really happy when he came back. Pictures will come later  ;D

Finllay, a really big thank´s to BB and Tekken for a good day. So nice to meet you in person and talk to you. Hope you made it home safely after a nice weekend at Kjula.
I will get my dotter to send you the pics she took at the start as soon as she get the them ready for it. Hope i´ll see you all soon again.

Bugsy/Patrik

We had a great weekend. Saturday was really good racing. If you had your car together you could run I think up to 6 times. I only managed 3 runs due to bending a pushrod. Tekken had spare ones (Thanks!) and we went to a friend next to the track and got it cut to correct length. Pulled a 9.57 at 243.6. Nice feeling. My 10th pass in the car.

Fredrik Nygren with the brown and white split ran a impressing 9.20 run not sure on the top speed but i think it was 248 km/h. Stian ran test runs and only for about 200 m passes and still ran 10.50 times. That car will be really quick.

The blue notch pulled a 9.83 i think. Doing 1.50 60s to save the tranny. Lots of power there.

The famous 1641cc bug had problems with his old clutch, totally toasted. He borrowed my old stage 4 and black magic disc. Still problems with slipping clutch, mostly due to not having enough shims to set it up properly. Then it burnt a head not sure why. The Pattes black fastback lost it´s flywheel.

Jyrki had some good runs. Not sure on the times.

Have lots of T-shirts left will sell them on SCC.

What an excellent event; the track and the whole area is very nice and there was so much to see at the Blacksmith race.

My results with the '65 street car were not the best possible. 1st pass I lost traction at launch (1.50sec 60 ft) and ran a 9.82/225. 2nd pass was even worse; I bogged the engine big time (rpm dropped to 1800rpm, engine almost died, 60ft 1.64) and ran a 10.16/225. 3rd pass started out ok with a decent 1.36sec 60ft time, but then the engine lost power before half way, resulting in a 9.88/195. I have not yet checked what is broken...

Thanks to Johan & the Turbo Town gang for arranging the VW class and everyone for the nice weekend!!! It was great to see all the Swedes and Norwegian guys again. I wanna also thank everyone who helped me over the weekend.

Jyrki

Back to reality again after a fantastic weekend in Sweden. A BIG thank you to everyone and especially the hosts and Johan. I really hope this is a event that has come to stay and I hereby confirm that I will be back  :)

It took us 6 hours from Oslo to Kjula with two breaks and with a easy tempo. Kjula Raceway is held at a former military airport and the track is 2000 (6560ft) meter long. The track is fully prepped and very wide. The area around is concrete and there are small hangars where you could find nice food and a playground for the kids. A few hundred meters from the depot places there was a barn where they held a concert without waking up the racers. When we got there we quickly got escorted to our depot place and the tech spec checked our cars on Friday evening. Turned in early on Friday night when Johan offered us to sleep in his race bus. When we woke up on Saturday it was sunny and warm. A lot of cars had arrived while we were sleeping including Tekken with the new version of his amazing race car. The race organizers was pro and they took good care of us all the time which was really nice.
I pre-heated my car and took it for a short drive and everything looked OK. I was told that the traction was great so I decided to do a short burn out and had quite a lot of pressure in my DOT tires. My friend Torgeir guided me perfectly in the water box and I built boost and let the clutch go in 2nd gear and did my best burnout ever. But it was not short... In front of the lights I used the ALS function again and built boost, a quick look at the meter told me that I had around 1.6 - 1.7 bar. I pre-loaded on the line lock and blink blink bling - GO! BANG BANG BANG and I could count the teeths breaking on my ring/pinion  :D Thats racing and using a T1 gearbox it is only a question on when and not if it will break.
If the weather forecast for Sunday had been better I would have called someone back home and asked if they could bring my spare gearbox the 300 miles from Oslo but they forecasted rain and I decided that the race was over for my part. Instead I watched the race and helped others if help was needed. The most eager guys got 7 rounds of racing on Saturday and I think that is more than enough for most of us. Congrats to Fredde and Johan with the new PB! Niklas with the 1641 toasted his clutch but quickly replaced it with a black magic and a stage 3. When the race was over the Turbo Town guys invited us over for a bbq and I could not think of a nicer way to end a good day.

Again thanks to the guys from turbo town and also my brother, Fritte and Torgeir. JLH and the guys did a day trip and got a nice sun burn before they headed home in the evening. It was nice talking to you Bugster and I hope we will meet at SCC. The Turbo Town Shootout was a great event and they deserve that a lot of cars is coming. The capacity is there and the track is good enough for all of us.

What does it take for a Norwegian to turn Swedish? Apart from a fast turbo car...  :)

See you all at SCC!

At least i got the t-shirt  :)

What a great saturday. Fantastic to see some VW-racing again. Thanks to Johan, Stian, Torleif and all the other nice racers that allways seems to have time to speak with us VW-fans.  I hope that this event will return next year and will do my best to get my own car race ready.

Great report Kalle! and fine pictures were taken.
Sorry to hear about your tranny failure. You do remember what your DTA ecu asked you when you engaged the ALS function right?  ;D
So curious what you will run with your combo when all stays put and you're on a good track!
