Title: Bob & Mark's Excellent 1967 Cal Look Adventure
Post by: Rennsurfer on June 29, 2010, 04:24:31 am
Since 1972, Bob and I have been best friends. The year 1979, while in class, during high school, he found my first car in our local newspaper... the orange 1966 Bug that you see in my signature. The year 2008, while on my way to buy another 1966 Bug, he stopped me and found the Zenith Blue 1967 Bug, on The Samba, that's also in my signature. He's enjoyed and owned more cars than many car dealers (we gave up trying to count 'em years ago... somewhere around 100). Many of those cars have been and continue to be air cooled VWs. Currently, he owns a gorgeous Java Green 1967 Bug and the Turquoise 1962 Bug convertible that took first place at this year's VW Classic.

Recently, he found a late model 1967 Bug that had only one paint job over it's original Ruby Red factory finish. He bought the car for next to nothing and scored pretty well... beings that it has the late low back seats (w/side release levers), and the original glass, body panels, fenders, and bumpers. Wanting to make this one a Cal Looker, he asked me if I'd like to be the project manager for it. I was more than honored to say the least. I'm looking very forward to seeing this car's transformation take place, obviously, but there's also the notion of building this car together with someone that I've known since I was 9 years young.

The car, right after Bob acquired it.

The engine is nothing fancy, as you can see. A single port, but with a later factory doghouse type fan shroud.

Original fenders and bumpers, all around.

One of the first things that I noticed, was the car is a 49 state model. Meaning... no undercoat. We quickly found out that the Ruby Red paint from the factory has held up rather well in the fender wells, after a brief cleaning.

Like I said, he got a nice car in the way of being all there. The original glove box, still intact.

More of the cabin. No rubber mats, but has the cool factory seat belts.

The spare tire well is flawless. Original paint color sticker still there, too. Both front and back aprons have never been in an accident.

Original door lock pull knob! The doors, decklid, and hood all feel like brand new. Just amazing that the car has never suffered any real impact damage.

One more last shot of the car and it's owner before we started taking it apart. By the way, this car fully ran when he bought it. Good deals are still out there if you're patient enough to look.

And so it begins... components from the trunk are removed.

Rear exterior items are gone, now.

Same with the front.

The car had some sort of relay under the dash. And if you look on the left a-pillar, another dome light switch used to reside underneath the normal location. It was also a factory unit, but without the rubber grommet surrounding it. Could've been for an alarm or something. Whatever the case, it's all being being removed.

Rear passenger area all gutted.

After everything was removed, it was time for the body to come off of the pan.

The day before this, Bob and one of his sons built the cradle for the body to rest on, complete with caster wheels.

Success!

As we stood there, inspecting the pan & chassis, we all laughed at how quickly the body was off... only 35-40 minutes. My girlfriend had never seen that operation before, so it was really cool for her to witness.

And there you have it... more pictures and updates to follow. All that we need now is for Bob to log onto The Lounge, introduce himself, and start helping me with the posting on this thread. HAHA!!

 ;D

Future plans for this car call for a mild street engine, a fresh factory interior including the correct style headliner (like the original one that it currently has), alloys, (Fuchs, for you kids), & factory VW paint color. We've narrowed the paint options to three.

HA! I bet that she wasn't at first. Hopefully, she appreciated it after the car was completed.

I can't see the photos yet (as ever, school firewall blocks photobucket!), but if the body comes off in 35 minutes, and the bodywork is all original and solid, then you're already three years ahead of the average European retoration! On my car I'm replacing or repairing panels that I already replaced on a full body-off resto 12 years ago! Like heater channels, quarter panels, bulkheads and valances... :o

Looking forward to seeing how this one progresses Mark, and get Bob on here too! :D

Wout & Neil, you guys are right... Bob got extremely lucky finding such complete car. Plus, like you both pointed out, one that has managed to stay devoid of rust. So far, we've inspected the pan and it looks solid. Amazing in this day and age.

Alright, Bob... time for you to get on this thread. Remember, I'm only the opening act, my friend.

Looks like a great project!!

Hey Bob... just remember...

Anybody can restore a VW back to stock.. It takes a REAL MAN to cut a VW up and make a Cal-Look out of it!

Rick, I thought that I put the words "Cal Look" on the subject title. Hmm... maybe my keyboard's broke.

 ;D

Christoph, you're right on cue... Bob came up with that idea and I like it. So, yes... we poached that from the movie.

Louis, will do. The rest of the week and this upcoming weekend are fully booked. But I'll be updating this thread as the work takes place.

Bravo! Nice solid base car and its in good hands with Mark as PM!

If you can let the cat out of the bag..... what are the 3 paint options?

Don't know if Bob wants me saying that just yet, Tom. But one of the colors is Sea Sand. Whatever color it ends up, we're painting the headlight bezels to match. We've decided on that much.

Nico, Pupjoint, & Roland... the original plan was to go work on the car tomorrow night. But I can't. Looks like next week, I'll have more free time to get some more work done on it. Next chance that I get to get over there, I'll post pics and updates.

Since Bob and I have both been busy with our jobs, our families, and life in general... we haven't had much time for the '67 project. This week, however, a lot of progress has been made on the car, thankfully.

The original plan was to take the gold paint off down to the factory Ruby Red, then start the bodywork. That plan got 86'd and down to the bare metal shoe goes.

Volkswagen original paint will always amaze me... I barely buffed out this area with a rag and it looks like new.

I walked around the car, taking pictures, and I hear some laughing. When I get back to this side of the car, I saw why. At least you got my fat thumb correct, Bob. HAHA!!

Bob, removing the last few items from the rear portion of the cabin.

An overview of the bodywork process.

The rest of the cabin has been fully stripped.

Plans for the decklid will include a convertible unit, which will look nice, as we all know.

The original fenders on this car only had minor dents. Bob got really lucky when he scored this car... having all original body panels is pretty cool when they're in such great preserved condition. Pretty soon, the body will be primed and we can start dismantling the pan. More pics to follow as we move forward.

Verry nice and fast when you don't have any welding to do  ;D

Are the convertible 67 decklids easy (read cheap) to find in the states, cause here in Europe you allmost have to sell a kidney to afford one  :o

Keep up the good work on the 67! The longer I'm here on the lounge, the more I feel I have to make a nice 67 callooker myself  ;D.

Convertible lids aren't cheap here, either. Probably a bit easier to find, though.

Hello ALL, My name is Bob, I'm the guy that Mark (AKA) Fred has talked about in a few of the threads, and this is my first post. I would like to take is opportunity to acknowledge Mark and his skillful eye and in the shots he post of our thread and the build of this new project car. Mark and I have been best friends for nearly 40 years now, and truly what an adventure it has been, we have been through so much, Up's and down's, High's and low's but through it all we have never stopped being there for each other, he really is an Amazing person!!! and Friend. Thank you Mark for everything!

Well now, to get back to the project, as stated in the header 1967 Excellent Cal look Adventure, that is what we hope to accomplish with this build, to do the car together and build something that we could both be proud of. There are alot of ideas being kicked around and with each passing week we keep refining the look of the car. Today we ordered the primer for the body, (Glasserit White base) the color is most likely going to be on the lighter side of the spectrum, so we wanted a primer that would compliment it. we've managed to get alot done in a short matter of time,as you can see from the pictures above. We will continue to post pictures as things get done, and would appreciate any comments and or ideas you might have. Thank you, and Remember, BE EXCELLENT TO EACH OTHER!!!!!
Bob.

Same old story... we're both very busy so work on the '67 has been slow. Bob did manage to get some paint stripping time in this week, though.

Also, the speaker holes in the front lower kick panels are filled in.

The car had a non factory looking hole on the a-pillar where the '67 style antenna should have gone. Instead, there was an early style antenna mounted on the driver's/left side front ¼ panel. Both holes have been filled... more on this car's radio installation later.

(edit) In case anyone was wondering about the yellowish looking primer on the left side of the car, it's only an experimental formula that a vendor was showing. Bob's car happened to be the one that got it sprayed on. The Glasurit primer has already been purchased, and is a different color... more like white, so the final color can look it's proper hue.

No worries, but Bob wants an Earth tone VW color (nothing too dark). We're still deciding on which one, but I think we've narrowed it down to a couple.

HAHAHA!!! THIS... coming from someone that built a '67 convertible with body trim and called it Cal Look. Even BETTER; your signature states that you own a '67 Resto Cal car. You're like shooting fish in a barrel. Thanks for making my friends and I laugh our arses off.

Same old tired story... we've both been extremely busy as usual. But at least progress has been met on the body. Laid on an entire gallon of white primer on everything related to the body (main structure, fenders, hood, hinges, etc.). The decklid will be on hold till we sort out the convertible & intake vents (behind license plate) for now.

Next, will be some sanding before the next coat. From there, we'll make sure that the panels are all straight.

Ivan, Thank you for the suggestion! The car was originally that color ( Ruby Red ) and I've had one before that color. I'm thinking more along the lines of Savanna beige or Lotus white or maybe even seasand. There's a ghia in DKP that is Albatross white, That color is amazing!!!!! not sure how it would look like on a 67 bug??? Does anyone know the colors that where offered in Europe for 1967?
Thanks,
Bob.

1967 (above the waistline only color) Type 2 Micro & Deluxe Bus L-472/Beige-Gray.

1967 Type 2 Delivery Van, Kombi, Single & Double Cab L-345 Light Gray.

1967 Type 2 Delivery Van, Kombi, Single & Double Cab L-87 Pearl White.

1967 Type 2 Ambulance only L-567 Ivory.

1967 Karmann Ghia L-80 Gobi Beige.

1967 Karmann Ghia L-10 K Castillian Yellow.

Personally, I'd opt for L-575 Nutria (Type 3 1964, I think) or the L-568 Sea Sand.

Here are VW colors listed with the years of production. I don't know how complete this source is but it looks fine.
I'd vote for ruby red, cause mine had this color before an idiot called me repainted it in another red.

Yeah, the nutria isn't seen a lot before on a beetle...  I guess that would be a neat touch!

WHICH Porsche Blue, Nico? They made many...  Pastel Blue (cool one from 1970), Adriatic Blue, Azzuro California Blue, Baltic Blue, Colbalt Blue, Estoril Blue, Gulf Blue (one of my favorites), Horizon Blue, Lapis Blue, Maritime Blue (a rather bright color), and Midnight Blue.

I'm sure there are others. But they always had great looking colors.

Hello All, Just wanted to clarify that the picture I posted of the painted pan is that of my 1962  not of the 67 we are currently working on, The pan as been stripped and is being prepared for paint. We will post some pictures when we are done, but should come out just as nice as the last one
Sorry for the mix up!

Imron was nice stuff, I used it on a stake body truck about 13 years ago.  Supposed to be very tough and chip resistant.  Has it held up well on the other pan?

Also would like to invite you to the next bug for breakfast. It's a good group of VW guy's, talking old times and new, and good food. Ask Mark about it, hope to see ya on the next one if you can make it. Keep the pics and updates coming, when ya can.

We finally got free time to work on the '67.

After taking my Bug to Cars & Coffee... we went to the shop.

Bob spent a lot of time removing the 43 year old factory installed sound board. I like this '67 stamp from VW.

Surprisingly, the pan is really good condition... only found four tiny holes just in front of the battery. Easily repaired.

Bob... making sure that the pan is solid. So far, so good. He really scored a great car that's all original with very little rust.

Next, we're taking the front end to a local shop to get adjusters and 2½" disc brake drop spindles installed. Then, the transmission will be taken over to Rancho so Mike H. can perform his magic on it. Stay tuned.

Another Saturday morning of Cars & Coffee then off to the shop, today. In this installment, we're extremely stoked! Why, you may ask? Well... although Bob scored a killer deal on this 49 State (no undercoat) dry '67, there was one problem with it; the fuel line was packed solid with rock hard varnish (car sat for 15 yrs. with solidified gasoline/varnish). Even though the car ran fine when Bob brought it home, the previous owner decided to run rubber fuel line INSIDE the car alongside the tunnel. WOW.

So, being the perfectionist that Bob is, he made the decision to take apart the pan and do this the correct way... remove the factory fuel (copper/steel?) line and replace it with stainless steel.

Here, we have the center wishbone removed, thus exposing the wonderful inner-workings that the engineers made us in Wolfsburg. (this shot from Bob's phone)

Another angle of the same.

And one more.

After the new stainless steel (slightly bigger inner diameter) line was cut & radius bent, it was tacked back into the pan tunnel and reinforced onto it's brackets. The shift linkage also received a tune up, a new bearing (or bushing... whatever it's called), and the clutch tube got some love and extra tack welds. The front portion of the new fuel line can be seen in this shot. Keep in mind that the pan is inverted.

A comparison of the factory and new fuel lines, such as they are.

The view of the rear portion of the newly installed fuel line. New grommets were added front & rear, where the line exits the pan.

The center wishbone section is now welded back in it's proper place rather nicely and ready for the welds to be ground  down.

Hi Ted, No this is just a hobby or a sickness depends on who you talk too. We are working on the car at a place called Sun Motors in Bellflower, Ca. John Sun is the owner and the true master here. He's helping with all the tuff stuff, I'm trying to finish the car for the Classic in June, Not sure if we can make it given the time frame but we're do the best we can, I can only work on the car Fridays and Saturdays, and John fills in the other day's. I think we've made good progress so far, mainly cause this car has no rust anywhere on the body, only 4 very small 1/8 holes in the battery tray area. We did eat up some time replacing the fuel line but had no choice, we had to do it right. By the way, Thank you for the invitation to Bugs for Breakfast!!! I will certainly take you up on that.
Bob.

Hi Rick, that's a wonderful idea!!!  Still need a lot of stuff plated and the more you have the less it is, also what about your interior? We can make a run to Bill & Steve's and see if Steve will give us the Bro deal on all the small stuff. Engine parts? Who's gonna help with your build? Definitely, let's get together !!!
Bob.

I have some stuff that needs to be plated... I haven't decided what I'm gonna do for bumpers. I have at least 2 sets of blades. I don't think I need much for the interior. I'm gonna have Zach do it for me. I'll need all the rubber. I need most of the motor parts. I'm gonna talk to Dave Rhodes about building the motor.

I apologize for taking so long to get these photos processed, Bob. But as you know, things have been um... interesting, shall we say?

 ;D

Without further delay, the top side of the pan is painted black and it's looking really good.

By the time I'm done typing this, we're hoping that the underside will be painted, as well. At least that was the plan, the other day, when were all at the shop. Front end and transmission are done. Now, we're gathering all of the remaining parts that go on the pan at this point. (brake lines, blah-blah-blah)

So, in theory, we should be sharing pictures of a rolling chassis in the near future. STOKED! On to getting more primer on the body and related parts is also in da werks.

Sorry, no pics to share right now... but a small update. This morning, we picked up the parts needed to make the pan a rolling chassis. While at Bill & Steve's, we ran into an old D.K.K. member from the '70s, Ken Chandler. Mr. Rosique, he was in your club before that. Said that he remembered you, too. Small world, yes?

When we get the pan completed, we'll be sure to post up some pics, here. Hope that you're all having a great weekend.

Today, is pretty dismal at the shop. After hitting my local skatepark for an early sunrise session to beat the heat, stopped by for a peek at everything. Still sanding and priming the bottom side of the pan Trying to get rid of the signature lines (water in the air lines, maybe?) from the previous attempt to shoot.

The transmission and axles have been shot as well. Need to remove the masking tape on the nuts, boots, etc. Too hot to work, today. Going home to enjoy some sun and Italian birra.

I'm looking forward to seeing the body painted and what wheels/tire combo you are going to go with.

Does the rear still have the factory 67 long axles?  What size tires front and rear?  I'm just wondering how its going to look with the stock width beam and dropped spindles as I am also in the process of picking up a 67 beetle and doing the same thing!

Keep up the great work!

Stephen

Bob has already chosen a color. I'll let him reveal that, since it's his car. Wheels... for the time being, will be first generation Flat Four BRMs with EMPI caps, satin black inserts, and sand blasted finish. Later, probably alloys.

Nutria Brown, it's really a type 3 color but I'm thinking it's going to look very nice on a 67 bug, I haven'[attachment=1][attachment=2]t seen one this color yet so at the very least is will be different. also have completed building the vented deck lid and started preping the body to shoot.

Agreed on the shiny things. Hated 'em thirty three years ago and even more so now. No polish used... just the super fine grade (#0000) steel wool at this point. I may experiment with some Mother's Aluminum Polish. But we like the anodized look of 'em at this point.

VERY good looking bier, right there. Thank you for the tip, sir. I'll make a point of locating that. Thankfully, Bob lives a rock throw away from a privately owned adult beverage only store that puts most of the corporate ones to shame in regards to variety/selection.

Hopefully, the picture(s) posted on this thread from us will be the BRMs fitted on the pan. Now that I've finally located the lug bolts. HA! Removed those wheels from my '67 in July of '09 and couldn't remember where the bolts ended up. Hence the Chimay celebration.

I agree, Neil... but I know Bob and he's gonna opt for stainless steel late model trim. Which, I've yet to see. I've only used/seen the factory anodized units.

175/65's front if you want grip, 145's if you want the look... If you're using drop spindles you'll be stuck with 145's, but I'd check to be sure those would even fit. 205/65 or 205/70 for more rubber rake in the rear.

Title: Re: Bob & Mark's Excellent 1967 Cal Look Adventure
Post by: modnrod on October 05, 2013, 02:52:36 am
175/70 front, 195/70 rear.

Slight rake, fat bum, goes around corners well, it's all good!

Or, whatever you like the looks of best.  ;)

Well I don't know on the chrome would have to call around for comparison there is a good bumper shop in whittier on greenleaf near telegraph but don't remember the name.I figure that would include any straightening or ding removal and they would look tits. Just as a side thought  the Wolfsburg west bumpers are $359 for front and $419 for rear.

also Fast Fabs hand made beautiful aluminum T bars are about $70.00

hey,

i had my fastback bumpers rechromed because they are so hard to find in a good or perfect condition. for what it is worth the guy quoted me 1000 euros to do them together with the overriders. but al this is done here in Belgium, i don't think it can really be compared to the US or other countries for that matter.
and like Jason says why not opt for a replacement bumper? there are good quality parts available for beetles, alas not for type3's.

anyway, keep up the good work, and for what it's worth, it must be one of the best looking 'trim-cars' i have seen in a while.  ;D

Bob, La habra chrome did both bumpers on the ghia complete,16 peices, for $875. I see a lot of the other chrome "shops" bringing the stuff to them, since very few actually have any tanks in the shops anymore.

Nicolas, Thank you for the compliment, Very much appreciated.  Randy thank you for the tip, I called them and a few other places and they're all quoting about the same.
I guess the new EPA rules are causing price increases. So we left the bumpers at Vern's place. Should be back in a week or so and I'll post some new pictures. Thanks again everyone for the ideas, comments and recommendations!!!

The rust on the original German made bumpers wasn't complimenting the paint... so we opted to get 'em chrome plated. I gotta say... to hear Bob say that they're better than what he normally sees, is saying a LOT. He's been in the manufacturing business since we left high school over three decades ago. He's seen every type of finish that most people don't know exist.

Pictures of said bumpers are forthcoming. We're stoked on their outcome and looking forward to getting 'em on the car.

Sadly, the bumpers... in all of their splendid glory, are still not mounted on the car. We bought the paint to coat the backside and still waiting for the booth to spray those and the turn indicator & headlight bezels body color. Sorry, man. Plus, we just now got the carriage bolts/nuts for the bumpers. We're just as anxious as you. If we had more free time, we'd get this thing done, already. It's turning out pretty good, though. Stoked on it, so far.

Thanks guy's, As I think back on the coolest cars that made the biggest impressions on me, was Mark's "My Toy" black 68 and Dave McNew's 67 Bug. Both Magazine worthy and beautiful!!! and both had the bezels painted to match. Yes it's true that there were many amazing rides back then but those two cars stuck in my mind that had the most impact for me. Just my 2 cents. ;)
