Title: do i need a shim between crank and flywheel?
Post by: Peter on March 26, 2008, 00:30:37 am
hey guys,
i m calculating end float and its maybe stupid, but i dont know if i need a shim between crank and flywheel.
with this shim i mean a shim with 8 holes that slides over the dowels.
i seem to remember that an original engine has one with four holes that sits between flywheel and crank.

thanks guys!!

Peter

No shim there.  Just the 3 large ones for your end play.

Early Model motors used a Paper gasket or metal shim because the flywheel was a non O ring Flywheel If your Flywheel has a grove in it for an O Ring then all you need is the 3 larger shims and a New Flywheel Seal the shims differ in thickness so you need the measure the end play without the shims then determin  what three shims you need to use to get your end play set.

Has anyone had the centre main shimmed? saw a tech article in hot vw's last year, think Rimco offer the service using steel backed bearings
