Title: advice on gearbox
Post by: ffred on March 30, 2011, 06:30:48 am
Hi,

My car is a 64, about 640kg. I'm building a 2276cc with MS230, raptor cam, 48IDA on it.
The engine must produce 230hp around 6500rpm and 26daN.m around 5000rpm. I'm planning to use it for dragstrip with MH slicks 6/26/15.

Which kind of gearbox do you recommend to handle it with reliability ?

Thanks

Fred

My advice would be to run a bus box.
You can get a bug box to work,
but the higher maintenence will wear you down.

While those are contributing factors, the most important one is missing.  That is YOU!  Some guys can blow up a gearbox with a stock engine, while others can make a semi-stock gearbox survive with over 300hp.
What kind of driver are you?

On the road, i drive gently.

On the strip, i would say that i preload the trans before starting, and i sometimes floor the throttle while shifting.

In my previous engine 2276cc, FK45, 42x37, 180cfm, 45DRLA, i didn't have any trouble with my stock case gearbox 3.78/2.06/1.48/1.12 4.12, superdiff and poor man posi equipped. I ran it with cold slicks (no burn out).

For the new combo, i suppose that my gearbox would not handle the abuse of torque and power. But it's my opinion.
I would like to have a reliable car. Not one which break the trans on every race. I would like to perfom 1.6s/60ft.
