Title: 600d
Post by: Rocket Ron on July 09, 2016, 19:52:44 pm
yep it's another 600. I bought it last year from the USA and has a Art Morrison tube frame.

Art runs a well know American car repalacememt chassis business but think this is the first fiat and it was done ten years ago. The original plan from the guy that commissioned the chassis was to run a Subaru turbo motor and vw based box. This has been junked and I will be transferring the close ratio box and 2276 Ida motor I have. Long term plans I have are to replace this with a turbo motor with EFI after getting used to the car.

Front end is vw ball joint and rear needs finishing and will obviously be narrowed vw. I have most of the bits, axles, gauges, a variety of wildwood componants, seats etc etc. and I am currently collecting the rest of the items I need.

Plan is to get it over from my long term storage at the end of the summer and out next year.

Nope, not what I meant  ::)

Does however mean you've  got way bigger balls driving your car without them. We did have a pm about you fitting some in future though if I remember correctly.

Your car is the reason I was looking for a fiat. 10s on street tires in a 78" wheelbase car is something else and have total respect for the car and your driving skills.

If you remember I did offer you a couple of panels FOC but they weren't what you were looking for as I would like to see it back driving where it belongs.

Regards Ron

It's not to hard -- -- I've been involved with 5 conversions so far -- you just have to decide if you want to go wild (full cage) or mild (just simple trans support)

Unfortunately most of my pictures disappeared with the cal-look forum....

I second the request for chassis photos. Sounds like a killer combination.

Wow..!  8)

Here in the US, Art Moorison is well-known in V8 circles...

https://www.artmorrison.com/homepage2.php (https://www.artmorrison.com/homepage2.php)

Even though they don't typically do VW stuff, and this is likely their first Fiat,
Definitely not their first rodeo..
If you wanted some pics of how to do it right, this would definitely be a good place to start!

Let's see how these guys did that chassis! ;D

Did pick this up at the weekend to mount the chassis to. Should make finishing off things a bit easier on the back !

I finally got this home to the garage  a couple of week ago.

Both my kids will be at uni as from September and I hoping to get stuck into this over the winter.

The  bottom of the chassis is junk as is the rear and will be replaced with mild steel tube. Not only are the chassis rails to low in relation to the height the body needs to be to clear the wheels but the steel used to construct the floor is the wrong size to be able to get a MSA certification.

I was lucky enough to be able to measure a ron lummus chassis at the weekend ( thanks lee) which gave me a few basic measurements to work from. The five inch narrowed axels I have will work and I have now sourced some 5 1/2 erco style rear wheels with standard vw offset which I will be using with 6" slicks. This rear set up gives me about 1" clearance on each side against the bodywork when sat stationary. The very tapered shape of the body doesn't  allow for anything wider. A Ladder bar rear end is my intention but may require a bit of head scratching to fit in the lenght required.

I am undecided on the the final front suspension, it currently runs a custom vw style front beam which is a little over 500mm wide. Vw discs and 13" wheels. I may look at doing something different up front but I think the 13" wheels will stay not because of any other reason than again room is very limited.

I now have most of the parts to make project this a reality and will be selling off some of the bits that came with the car I no longer need.

Here are a few photos of the project as it sits. There is a lot of work ahead so I will be posting a few over the coming  months.

Regards Ron

Any progress?   :)  I need inspiration to keep my own build moving  ;)
I hauled my 600 back home to my heated garage this weekend.. (maybe that will help getting something done).
