Title: Turbo Oil Info Needed
Post by: GrigioTR on August 19, 2020, 16:05:15 pm
This is my first post and hope someone can give me some information on what oil to use for my turbo.  I have just purchased a Type 1 Cal Look bug that has a vintage RayJay blow through turbo.  The system has an oil bag and an external oil pump.  The car has not seen much use recently.  I want to drain the oil and refill the system and hope someone on the forum can recommend what type of oil I should use.

Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions.

Put 15 x 40 in it with a high zinc percentage.

when you say 'oil bag' are you referring to a turbo sump or dry sump tank/container ?

Dry sump with an external pump. The SS tank is behind the rear seat. Really a nice custom fabricated system with AN fittings and stainless mesh tubing.  Well thought out.

My under deck lid turbo gets so hot, the only oil that will keep the 10 psi/ 1000rpm and any pressure at idle is 20w50 Dino or something like Liquimoly 10w60 racing oil which is what I use.

Martin,
My turbo is externally mounted under the engine tin.  It is a blow-through, with hot and cold air plumbed pretty much like the current CB turbo systems. It was built in the '80's.  I am settling in on using Swepco 306 20-50wt. in both the turbo system and the engine.

Good call. I’ve tried lighter oils in mine. Like last fall when the temps dropped I put some lighter oil in it. This year when I started driving it again in normal summer weather I was shocked to see zero oil pressure when I stopped at lights. I was revving the motor to keep some pressure there. Crazy!

I take it the heat of the engine thinned it further. I'm ready to do a change on mine, thinking of going thinner than the 20/50 that's in there now, but I'm having 2nd thoughts about it. I'm thinking better stick to what I normally use. It works so don't fix what ain't broke.
