Cool Thanks buddy..... I remember these page from a while ago  :)

The muffler I have seems a little "Short"  :-\ I'd like it to come a little further out to the right  :)

Time to pull out the grinder & welder I guess  :)

The Header is IDENTICAL to the one I modified for my 40hp  :-\

I've got a glasspack on my bug at the moment, and I hate it! Ok, it's on a temporary 1500, but its so horrible that I've not driven it since the end of January, and won't until I've built up a new motor with a proper exhaust!
No wonder the single quiet pack was developed! ;)

For me this its all about the "DETAILS" of how this style developed.....

The "REASONS" guys did certain things.....

Just my 2 cents as they say  ;)

Just a thought....You may also want to consider what prompted enthusiasts to use certain parts at that time and then stop using them . Back when glass pack mufflers were popular there were not many other performance muffler choices. Also, many people used them because they saw others using them, not because it was a smart or wise choice to so so. When I was in high school I watched my fellow gearheads do this very thing. The cherry bomb stickers did look cool syuck on the side windows of the car though.....

That magazine article with all the different exhausts just goes to show that numbers have been used in marketing all through the car enthusiast ages... that being said, I call bullsh*t on the exhaust tips adding two to three horsepower.  Too funny, and I literally LOL'd when I read that.  :D

We're drifting kinda off topic here.. The question isn't what muffler works best but what they used back in the late 60's and more importantly how they looked, regardless of what they found out later and why they opted for something else..
Everything develops over time but the main clue for us nostalgic guys to make a car look period correct is to find the time frame you want your car to represent and stick to it.
I'd say the so called pre-cal style gives you a lot of freedom as there were few rules and more variation between the cars than later. They were just kids fooling around with VW's using parts and services available at the time, not knowing they were in the making of what we know as cal-look that became a very specified style over time.

How lucky are we to have some of those "kids" here to ask? Keep on asking Lee, Monki see, Monki do  ;D

We have a "Saying" back in the UK....... You Hit The Nail On The Head

I don't think I really need to add anything to what Rocket Racing has said...... Monki See Monki Do  ;) ;D

I'd dig havin' a listen to a nice engine with those Doug Thorley "Bugpipes" . . . a slow idle would sound cool!
Numbers 1 & 4 blap out the right side stinger, and then, 3 & 2 take their turn out the left side . . . horsepower in stereo!
