Title: New case, which machining options?
Post by: Jesse/DVK on August 08, 2008, 19:24:43 pm
Hi guys, I'm getting a new AS41 mag case for my 1915 engine. What machining options should I do?

Bore Engine Case to 94mm Pistons
Drill / Tap / Plug Oil Galleries
Full Flow (Drill and Tap Engine Case)

These above I sure of, but what about these:

Sand Seal Case w/Seal
Shuffle Pin Center Main
Sleeve Lifter Bores (Silicone Bronze)
Sleeve Lifter Bores w/Groove (Silicone Bronze)

Thanks!

The top items are a really good idea, with boring the case for 94mm jugs is necessary

The items below are probably unnecessary. Thousands of motors are in operation without the sand seal. Shuffle pins keep the case halves from walking around at really high rpm. If you're not going to hitting 8000rpm plus all the time, it's probably not needed. Sleeved lifter bores would only be necessary for a lifter bore problem that came from REALLY aggressive cams.

While my race motor case does have shuffle sleeves, it has none of the other lower options. Although the next time it is out and apart, I will do the pulley seal thing because I'm using a home brewed crankcase evac system that needs the case to be sealed.

If you are sending to a shop for boring for 94's, you should think about having them clearence it too. Then if you find a good deal on a stroker crank before its together, you will all ready have the work necessary to put the bigger stroke in.

That's a good point Greg.
(From one "real" (former professional, current hobbyist) machinist to another, who makes and reads paper blueprints, pulls handles and turns knobs.)

I would  also deck the case.

Ok guys, thanks for your answers. I know enough now.

@ cal-look, decking is included when they bore the case.
