AWESOME, Bates! Extra credit for running big heater boxes and a distributor, too.

It is a great feeling. This engine has gone together a few times with different components but this is the final combo for now. I tried to do everything I could myself from machining the barrels, pushrods, relief valve seats, topping lifter bores, balanced the rods end to end, balanced the pistons, brazed on the pick up tube, welded up any unnecessary holes in the tin, etc. I also made the AN -6 carb fittings and M12 x 1.0 plug, opened up the float bowls and fuel inlets and made steel AN -8 breather fittings for the fuel pump block off and passenger side valve cover.

Hopefully it will be going in very soon! I have to clean up the wiring, do some body  work to the engine compartment seal channels and install factory style sound deadening before it goes in.

As for the header, it's a Berg 1 3/4" header with new heater boxes that have been opened up and 1 3/4" pipes put in before being sealed back up. They had the header and heater boxes in stock but no mufflers so I got a pretty good deal on it. Since their header guy is so flakey, they may never make them again (Dee's words, not mine). Since they weren't going have mufflers in the foreseen future, I hacked off the flange and reclocked it for the A1 I got from James @ Buggy House very cheap. I also made an 02 bung and welded that in.

Here's the 67 waiting:

Always dug the way your car looks and it's proper finish on the alloys. Looking forward to seeing it all come together, John.

I wish. This is a 67 I bought near Klamath Falls, Oregon about 5 year ago. It wears a lot of it's original 45 year old paint and really could use a respray. It's a good 20 footer and always looks better in pics than in person.

Motor is in.  ;D  Need some AN fittings for the oil lines, some heater hoses and wire it up. I also need to move one of the Fast Fab Kafer brace cross bar tabs. The down strut won't clear the drivers side heater box since my motor is so narrow, so I've got to cut off the tab and move it about a 1/4". I'm also going to make a custom traction bar that tucks up closer to the body and will clear the muffler and use outboard rubber mounts like a late bus.

Looks like I'll need my back up Mike Collins tranny freshened up pretty soon. ;D

Just need time, money and better weather. Work has slowed and I've had to spend a bunch of time and money lately on stuff other than VWs ($1200 on a Fridge last week). I've got fuel in the carbs, 5 quarts of 10W-30 VR-1 in the sump. I need 2 -8 90* AN fittings that I'll have Friday, wire the gauges, bleed my brakes, align the suspension and break the transaxle. ;D

I"m also contemplating shortening my manifolds a 1/2" so my #2 velocity stack clears the decklid with the filter on.

Earl's Ano-Tuff? That's what I need for the Pro-Lite 350 hose. I think this will probably be my last fitting purchase this year.

Title: Re: BATES: is that motor done YET?
Post by: stealth67vw on November 05, 2011, 03:33:27 am
Got my fittings today, oil lines built, System 1 filter mounted, and gear oil in trans  I went to fire the motor and I've got no spark. It's hooked up exactly as it was with the old motor, so either the Pertronix took a dump, MSD coil or the 6AL took a dump. They don't call MSD Mysterious Spark Disappearance for nothing. >:(

My fucking intermediate housing leaks on the new trans too. ::)

I carry an offshore brand, but it's hard annodized, all black.  Pretty damn sexy if I do say so my damn self.  I'm going to run it and the pro-lite hose on my IDA's.   ;D

I had a co-worker go down to Reno a month ago and pick up a few hundred bucks worth of fittings for me at Summit and he came back with Fragola and Summit brand fittings instead of the Earl's fitting I sent him to Summit for in the first place. Sure he saved me $75 buying the cheap stuff but all the swivel fittings don't work with the Pro Lite hose.   ::)

I used some Summit fittings that a customer bought.  I was plumbing up his blower drag motor  ;D
After I assembled them with the Summit hose and Summit fittings, I could pull the fitting off of the hose by hand.  SCARY!  I put the brand tha I carry on the same Summit hose........perfecto.

Glad you made it safely half way back home. Too bad I couldn't get my car fired before you got here and I hope the case gets your car back on the road.

It was worth the drive...;D  You've helped to save the 2017 build, rest assured! ;D  I've got lots of finigling details I need to work on throughout the car (new tach, eventually a wideband, armor coating my interior floors, new pedal cluster, etc)... hoping to start wrenching before long, but also getting ready to settle in to another long winter.  I'm grateful to be working in a heated shop, that's pretty sweet.

Drive back was worse than the drive over, I think.  I couldn't make it up Doak Mountain in the Ford Contour and got help from a passing Good Samaritan to hook up chains... right before the snow plow came by to clear the road.  ::)

Same thing with "hard" fittings for teflon/stainless hose.(Summit/Jegs brand).  If you want to replace the olives, forget it.

Those are supposed to be a 100r14 spec, and all interchange.   Failure on the part of Summit.

Pertronix is bad and the trans still leaks pretty bad after tightening all the intermediate housing nuts to 20lbs. I guess the whole fucking thing has to come out and the gear box has to come apart.   >:(

My left axle tube leaks.......I may just let it leak!  LOL

Title: Re: BATES: is that motor done YET?

I'll probably break in the engine, get all the bugs worked out and pull it because it's not just weeping. You can fix an axle tube leak without disassembling the whole gear box. I have to pull the axles, the diff, and pull the whole gear stack out.

I haven't had time to do any tuning yet but so far it is very snappy with awesome throttle response. I was expecting it to be a little sluggish with the 1 3/4" exhaust and 40mm vents, but the FK-45, 5.352" rods, and tool steel wrist pins make up for it. I've run it for about an hour total but have not driven it yet, I need to bleed the brakes, wheel alignment and double check all the nuts and bolts of the suspension since I've replaced everything. After I get it everything dialed, I have to pull the trans since my intermediate housing is pouring gear oil out.

And...... it still runs, didn't blow off the filter or cooler, no "extra" holes in the top of the case, trans still works in all gears, fan belt is not shredded, no speeding tickets yet, and still no oil leaks. I only took it up to 40 mph but it got there in a hurry. I think the 185/65s and stock torsions out back have to go.  LOL

How was the torque?  What tires are you going with?  205/70's?
