Jim Motto and I were roommates back in the 80’s & 90’s when he first bought the chop from Scott Guildner, He sold the car to our friend Tony back in 91 or 92, we lost track of the bug  but jim stayed in touch with Tony, About two weeks ago I was talking to Tim Schendel (Tim’s VW Service) he asked if Motto’s bug was at Classics just a few days before, I said no way last I heard it was Sitting in a field in Palmdale Ca.  This morning when I got to work I get an email from Motto telling me that he bought the old chop top back from Tony and that was him towing it home on classic Sunday… the bug is in pretty good shape, just a few scratches, chipped paint and a ripped ragtop cover, but best of all the car still has the original BRM’s and the Gene Berg 2019 motor… Jim hasn’t tried to fire it up yet as he hasn’t touched a VW since he sold the chop rod, I told him I’ll pick it up and park it in my garage and get it running ( that’s the kind of guy I am)
it’ll be in my garage within the next couple of weeks,,,  and maybe Jim Ratto can make the 2 mile drive to my house and help.. HECK he can even bring a couple of friends…
This morning I went home, flipped through some photos and I couldn’t wait to get to a scanner so while I was in line dropping off my kids at camp I took a couple of shots of the photos with my cell phone. ENJOY phil adam

PHIL where's the big bad motor? 1641?  Roll Eyes

At the time of that shoot it did have a 1641cc but soon after he had a 2019cc berg motor built.. from what is was told just last year it was at Arao Engineering where Russ rebuilt the 48IDA's and got it running from then on it was parked.
i just sent this link to Jim and told him to sign up as a member...

today is the day when jim is taking his chopped bug (rag chop) back to scott guildner to have scott repaint the car, no telling how long it'll be at scotts shop but jim hopes to have it ready for the next HOTVW DRAG DAY this fall,, jim thought it would be cool to stop by my place and pop off some before shot before that bug got torn down. plans are to completey restor the bug back to the glory days of the 80's and 90's, i will keep everyone posted and include photos of the restoration... be well phil adam

Was one of my favorite chops. I saw that car for the first time when I was  showing the M&M at the Jamboree in 1989,...time flies. Great to see the car is making a come back, wish I could say the same.
