So Pat fired his 1776 with Kompressor & injection last friday for the 1st time! He went to the rolling dyno this week and scored a 185hp and a big oomph factor it seems.. not bad for a tiny 1776...

Yvre is the master of the electronic stuff (don't ask Pat to turn a computer on or off, he'll scream at you Smiley ) He's been working with Pat to get the electronic injection working.

This week he put the rest of the car together (lights, fenders, removing the tape from those lexans windows...), test fitting everything.

So they are on their way right now to Bitburg to see how it's all going to go. If some of you want to join Wink I'll be going on sunday (unless it rains or everything is blown up tomorrow)

Not so well saturday, and quite badly on sunday.
Let me get a beer so I can tell the whole story...


(runs to the fridge and opens a cold one).


A few years ago Pat managed to score a free Eaton compressor from a 2.3L Merc Kompressor.
He assembled a 2.1L engine from parts he had laying around, slapped a Weber 50 DCOE on it and installed it in the muppet.
The car made 210 hp on the dyno, but was barely driveable because of the carb, and the belt system was clearly no up to scratch.

 
3 years ago, he began building his own drag car (seeing that Vanessa drives the 62 all the time now).
That's when I talked him into putting a Megasquirt injection on it (I had always wanted to do one, and the price was right to him  Grin ), so that's how the 'joint venture' started. We bought the ECU (MS1 Extra from Philip Ringwood in the UK), I bought the injectors, pump, etc at a local Mercedes dealer (with employee discount) and read and read and then read some more while he assembled the engine with some more leftover parts.

Engine specs are:
69 stock non-counterweighted crank x 90.5 Mahle cylinders
Stock rods (  Roll Eyes  )
40x35 041 heads
Engle 110 cam
7.3:1 CR
Homemade pulleys with an industrial belt
009 distributor with 24° max advance (we decided to start with fuel only, as recommended)

Fast forward to 4 weeks ago.
Pat calls me to tell me he wants to get the car running for the last session of the year at Bitburg!!!
There are still a zillion things to do on the car, and the engine has never even started (it was jut run in with carbs 2 years ago).

So we spend a few late nights to finish the last details (you know, like fuel system, complete ECU wiring, etc...), and he takes an appointment at the dyno this thursday (08 oct). So we need to get the car running for this date.

On thursday, the car starts and we manage to get a pretty good idle. But unfortunately he filled the tank with E85 instead of super unleaded fuel (dunno why), so it needs to be way richer that what the injectors are capable of (we reach 50% duty cycle just revving it...). And the car dies as soon as we open the throttle.

On friday night, we change the fuel and start it again. I had prepared something that vaguely looked like a fuel map on basis of some maps I found online for turbocharged flat 4 engines. I also modified the Acceleration Enrichment values, and this time the car responds well to throttle changes. We play with the idle for a while, I grab the LM1, the laptop, and we hop in the car for a few runs around the block (without windows or lights, of course).

I was hoping to do a bit of tuning, but the car is so cramped (or maybe I'm too big  Roll Eyes ) that I only managed to check the AFR on the LM-1. We were running rich all the time so that was good. First impressions: the car is very light, very responsive, and it's very cold outside!!! This is my butt you actually see through the rear window in this picture:

Between friday night and thursday, we spend some more late nights working on the car, but we are ready for the the dyno session on time!
We make a total of 5 or 6 runs (can't remember, I'm tired...), playing with the AFRs and the ignition advance.
We start at 145hp (way too rich and 21° total advance), and finish the afternoon at 185hp and 270 Nm torque (12.5 AFR, 25° total advance and 12 psi boost).
I have the pics of the dyno graphs on my camera but I need to find my camera first! The torque curve is super flat!



Only problem we have is that the engine will not rev past 5,000/5,500 rpms. We have no rev limit set on the ECU, so we think it must be spark blowout?Huh

Anyway, we are ready for Bitburg so we met our objective.

Due to the rain (California deaming...), we only manage 2 passes on saturday.
But with the 3.000-5.000 rpm powerband and the small tires (they're 24in currently - switching to 26in this winter), the car maxes out at the 1/8th mile mark  Shocked
With the car coasting to the end, the times are nothing to be proud of (best of 13.4 I believe).
But most important, the car goes super straight and Pat feels confident with it (would be a shame at those speeds  Grin )

On saturday night, we meet a nice german gentleman who is also very much into Megasquirt, and we try to sort out a few problems we still have (no Lambda reading on Megasquirt, different code versions between the ECU and the tuning software, etc...).

But while doing so, we manage to screw the base settings, and it takes us 2 passes on sunday morning to correct this.

On the 3rd pass, the compressor pulley bolts shear during the 3rd gear burnout, so that's the end of our racing. It starts to rain again anyway, so we leave the place, eat our 3rd Burger King of the Week-End and head home.

Plans for the winter:
- redo compressor pulley
- fine tune fuel map
- switch to wasted spark ignition
- add water injection to reduce intake temps
- pass the 200hp mark (hopefully) and do some real 1/4 mile times


No I'm off to bed - I really need some sleep!!!
