Title: swing axle box
Post by: Garrick Clark on October 22, 2017, 13:54:10 pm
Hi Guys .
So My 1500 box is getting worn . I  don't think this year of box is worth spending money on. I might be able to get my hands on an AT irs box.
Is this a good starting point for a good street box, motor is turbo'd. Also is this AT box one of these twin side plate jobbies that seam to be more desirable, and can it be converted to swing axle.

i think thats a solid base to start on with.  with DSC even better for SA conversion and you get all the late goodies inside. plus the 3.88 RP assuming this box has never been opened before.

I think the box you're thinking of is the late AB box that came in 70s 1300s. Much stronger than a 1500 box with a 4:12RP. I had David Butler build me one recently with billet sideplate, super diff and steal shim in the nose cone. Even with stock gears he reckons its good for over 150hp.

There is a local guy with  SWING AB box, and another guy with an AB IRS box out of a 1303.
Is the IRS box stronger than the SWING box.

almost all the AB boxes i have stripped had 113 key gear sets and 10 tooth mainshaft. i dont think they are any stronger than early ones.

The IRS cv,s and drive shafts take much of the shock loads away from trans internals helping it to live.

I thought the SSC box from 76-78 was the strongest box. I don't know if you can covert these to SA?
